Thumbs up Tim Berners-Lee knighted

Quote:
Tim Berners-Lee, widely regarded as the inventor of the World Wide Web, has recieved what many would see as the ultimate honour from the British Queen, namely a knighthood. Sir Timothy Berners Lee, KBE (Knight of the British Empire), was awarded the knighthood in recognition for his "services to the global development of the Internet".

During the hour long ceremony, held yesterday at Buckingham Palace, the Queen dubbed Sir Timothy a Knight Commander using the sword that had belonged to her father, King George the VI. This is not the first brush with royalty for Sir Timothy either, the last time being in 2002 when Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and husband to the Queen, awarded him the Albert Medal of the Royal Society of Arts.

Sir Timothy had the following to say about the occasion:

"I am humbled by this great honor. The Web came about through an ongoing collaboration with my fellow inventors and developers worldwide. Everyone in the Internet community should be recognized by this honor

The Web must remain a universal medium, open to all and not biasing the information it conveys. As the technology becomes ever more powerful and available, using more kinds of devices, I hope we learn how to use it as a medium for working together, and resolving misunderstandings on every scale.

Sir Timothy, 49, is doing pretty well this year for the invention he came up with over a decade ago. Earlier on in the year we reported on how he had been awarded a million euros for his invention. Probably about time he recieved a bit more recognition really, for an invention that has had such a profound impact on the way we all live. We wonder what he'll come up with next?
