[Merged] 2004 US Presidential Election
Kerry picks Edwards as running mate.
Indeed. Edwards may be able to bring some geography. He did, afterall, carry South Carolina.
However, this is a bit of good news to me. We can now paint the two of them. Kerry has been labeled the #1 most liberal person in the U.S. Senate, and guess who is #2? Edwards. That will not sit well with a lot of folks.
Any thoughts?

Re: Kerry picks Edwards as running mate
I think it will help him. He isn't that bad, and I think he has a less controversial record, which would help. I believe Kerry is very weak, and he'll struggle to beat Bush, even though things have gone extremely bad for Bush.
Personally, even though she'd wouldn't do as good a job as Edwards, I almost wish he said Hilary Clinton, as it just gives women more ammo to say "They'll never be a woman president", "Politics is a man's world", etc. first step to achieving it anyway.

Re: Kerry picks Edwards as running mate
Edwards also has virtually no experience, and Kerry used to be his enemy.

Edwards repeatedly said he would not be Kerry's running mate, though it has been obvious for months he was running for the No. 2 job. Will he be honest in the future, or did his denials in fact expose his character, or lack thereof?

“‘In the Senate four years – and that is the full extent of public life – no international experience, no military experience. You can imagine what the advertising is going to be next year,†Kerry told the New York Times in January. “When I came back from Vietnam in 1969 I don’t know if John Edwards was out of diapers then. Well, I’m sure he was out of diapers.â€
|
Quote:
|
“I think the American people want an experienced hand at the helm of state,†the Los Angeles Times quoted Kerry as saying on Feb. 3. “This is not the time for on-the-job training in the White House on national security issues.â€
|
Edwards said,
Quote:
|
Edwards’ campaign, incessantly described by the media establishment as positive and upbeat, ordered underlings to describe Howard Dean as an “elitist from Park Avenue in New York City†and charge that Kerry “can’t claim to change America because he has been part of the failed Washington politics for too long,†CNN reported Jan. 22.
|
Who is the loser?
Quote:

“Edwards says he’s the only one who can win states in the South. He can’t win his own state,†Kerry told his aide David Wade, in a remark picked up by a reporter’s microphone, the New York Times reported Feb. 3.

Lovely insults:
Quote:

Edwards “wasn’t in the Senate back then,†Kerry said in February. “I don’t know where he registered his vote, but it wasn’t in the Senate.â€
|
Quote:

To NBC: “Senator Kerry voted for NAFTA; I opposed NAFTA. I wanted to make sure voters knew about that.â€
|
Quote:
|
To the Washington Post: “I think it’s clear that Senator Kerry and I have very different records on trade.â€
|
etc.
Haha.

Re: Kerry picks Edwards as running mate
Yeah well, I think for Kerry, the desire to be president overrides any competitive animosity in the past. I don't think Kerry ever hated Edwards, he had to put Edwards down to win the primaries.
It is worth pointing out to the Brits, despite how important the title sounds, of vice-president, the VP isn't considered the president's most trusted aide. That is normally give to the chief-of-staff post who Kerry will nominate if he wins.

Re: Kerry picks Edwards as running mate
Sounds like a political ploy to me to build some kind of "dream ticket" where the majority of voters feel that they got something out of it. Also useful for generating further support politically given that between the two candidates they have massive voter support.
Given the different stances by the two men on some issues it will be interesting to see what policies and ideas they come forward with.

I would hope that people would vote on the issues and campaign on the issues and not trying to 'paint' the two contenders with the liberal brush.

Re: Kerry picks Edwards as running mate
Bill O'reily made a curious statement about Edwards being chosen to attract the female vote.

Well I don't agree with all of it, but I don't have vehement objections either.
What I'd like somebody to explain to me is the enduring hold Vietnam has on American politics. Why does a successful President of the USA have to have had something to do with a botched military adventure in a part of the world America had no business in?
EDIT
Oh hang on, by that token Kerry might as well give up now, Bush already has the election in the bag

Re: Kerry picks Edwards as running mate
Thats what I never understood either, why would fighting in the war increase your chances. Then again Bush never fought in the war either, he didnt even turn up for training when he was in the army

Err, should we *really* be commenting on this?
After all, it might upset someone at Fox News and he'd have to rant about the British trying to interfere with US elections again...!!
