Re: Bnp
surely their political party should have no bearing on them being a teacher or not...removing their right to a job beacuse of what political party they support must be illegal in some obscure law somewhere? living in a "democracy" and all that...

What about teachers of history?? Do you want them to teach about the holocaust?
I think they should not be allowed. With free speech comes responsibilities and children are impressionable. You cannot give them a platform to spread their views

Re: Bnp
teacher dont in general spread their views though. in my education, the teachers have always taught out of a text book about what happened, and not included their personal opinions in it. they have to teach to take into account everyones views do they not?

Re: Bnp
im afraid teaching is about the curriculum (should be) not what political party you back, if you exclude someone for being a BNP supporter/member then thats wrong, as much as i hate to say it but its true...

Why???
The BNP are a political party in this country, Very right wing, possibly racist they have very little support and very little power but all they are is a political party.
Would you complain if a teacher was a member of the Torys,Labour,Liberals,Greens,Raving Loonys,Plaid Cymru (Welsh National Party), SNP (Scottish National Party), Sinn Fein????
No I think not.
We are supposed to live in free country where people can have their own political beliefs and not be victimised for them. But the politically correct crowd are fast eroding this freedom.
The guy who has been sacked for being a member or standing for the BNP will have a very god case for wrongful dismissal and I hope he takes the school to court and I hope he gets a big payout.

Re: Bnp
Normally I would agree, But Teachers can spread their views in a way that is unnoticeable in the language they use.
Again however history is not a subject that can be teached by them

Re: Bnp
I think Pem was just being cautious how these thread's tend to develop... so no slanging matches please
And back on topic - I think you've hit the nail on the head Pierre... being a BNP member doesn't mean you sacrifice your rights.

Re: Bnp
I'll probably get denounced as a racist for this, but hear me out.
Rightly or wrongly (and I believe wrongly), the BNP is a legally recognised political party. Unless they incite racial hatred specifically, you can't really act on someone's political bias. Technically, this is the same as firing someone who, say is a Tory. It's like the free speech issue. Everyone agrees there should be free speech, but want to shut people up when they say something they don't agree with. The only amendment here is the Incitement To Racial Hatred Act. The law is the law, and anyone breaking it, regardless of political party should be punished for it. Everyone complained when Le Pen got so much support in France, but at the end of the day, that's democracy. The majority of people get their way. Wether it's right, wrong, racist, non-racist, is immaterial. People said how the bomb in Spain changed so drastically, the political landscape there. Well, thats democracy. What the people want, the people will get. Until the BNP is banned (And hopefully it will. Although wether I can display my St George's flag without a backlash remains to be seen), you have to allow people to act on it's behalf, when they are in the confines of the law. I don't think i've come across very well, what i'm trying to say in my head there, but you should get the idea.
Now, on Question Time, apparently he has a website that distributes racist material. If that is true, then he should be charged, which probably would lead to a contractual dismissal. If not, i'm sure on prosecution they would have suffcient grounds.
Also, people mentioned about him spreading political opinion thorough his teaching. But couldn't that be said for all parties? I agree though, if he treats any children differently, regardless of political party, he has to go.
But someone on QT said by making an example of him, you are making louder, giving him more foundation to build on, and you will force others to go underground fearing a backlash. This is true, and will cause a serious problem fighting racism in this country.

Re: Bnp
Bah!!! This reminds of when I had to keep quite about being an athiest in school because it would be offensive for me to air my views. However it wasn't considered offensive to make me organise a Christian based Assembly.
It's not a teacher's job to push their opinions or to step outside the national curriculem guidelines. Also anyone who foments racial hatred in the workplace will be breaking the law which will lead to disciplinary action. They can hold their views but if they demonstrate them or try to express them they will be reported. After all the students DO know their rights in this respect.Insult one of the ethnic minorities students racially and they won't stand for it.I would also report them if I heard any such behaviour. However as long as they don't use any propoganda in the workplace they are entitled to their viewpoint and to keep their job.
