Re: been to eastern europe
As I've mentioned once in a thread, my grandparents (mother's side) are Hungarian, I've visited many times in my childhood, and we are planning to go there in the summer to deliver my Grandfather's ashes.

Re: been to eastern europe
Spent 3 weeks on holiday in Moscow about 18 months ago.
Oh, my company has also just opened a big office in Budapest. I think they might be wanting me to spend time over there. I'm not sure whether I would like this or not at the moment. I'd have to look at what they were offering me to go there.

Re: been to eastern europe
I've been to Budapest a couple of times with work. It has the potential to be a most beautiful city, but you get the impression that some time back any funds available for maintenance dried up completely and the decay is starting to show. I imagine that this is something that could well be reversed once they join the EU.
What does stand out like a sore thumb is the number of American chains that are sprung up in the city. Given the food at the hotel I was staying in I was quite glad that there was a MacDonalds almost next door, but it does all seem somewhat incongruous.

Re: been to eastern europe
I've toured through about half of Eastern Europe... mainly Poland, Cezch, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romenia. Nice place. Nice architecture. Not where I want to live.

Re: been to eastern europe
I've been to Poland a few times, both Warsaw and Krakow - Krakow is stunning, Warsaw is interesting. I find Polish folk to be incredibly interesting people, if you can get them involved in a discussion about their country - they are very proud of it.

Ha-ha not for long. I remember when Portugal before it joined and after joining the EU. The price's shot up over night.
Would be funny if Poland had a problem with hundreds of thousands of British people wanting to get into there country when they join the EU

Funny, I just returned from a vacation in Portugal. Especially outside the coastal areas, one euro was worth about 1 pound. 60 Euros for a decent small hotel, 60p for a small beer, and most we paid for a meal including a bottle of wine was 55 euros. 40 was more like the norm. You could pay that for just the bottle of wine in the UK.

No I didn't, but this trip did remind me of how horribly overpriced everything in the UK is.

Re: been to eastern europe
Was in Prague a few weeks back. Beer about 50P a pint, fags about £13 for 400. Went for a meal in a nice restuarant, 3 course meal for 4 people and 4 drinks each. Totalled to about £25.
Some of the more touristy places prices are over double this.
Electrical goods were far more expensive than in the UK
