Any reason why this has not hit the news before??

Yes, only 4% of the entire population is Muslim, but the Southern provinces (near the Malaysian border) are predominantly Muslim.

that is true. Fortunately i am going to the north in the summer, so lets hope the violence doesn't spread there

I don't think you have much to worry about, though these days places that are heavily populated with tourists (Kao San Road in BKK) are 'risky' anywhere in the world.

As far as I'm concerned Thailand in general is one of the most relaxed, friendly and pleasant places to spend a vacation. I'm sure you will thoroughly enjoy it.
