Re: OAP Abuse

it truely is discusting
I used to work in a nursing home - my mum and dad used to run one, and i know that some peeps do cry out cos of dementia, but not to the exteam of these people. further more i cant understand how the sores got to this stage - if people are bed ridden then u turn them every hour or so and have special matress to stop sores occuring, if sores do occur they used to be dressed every morning and cleaned to stop any rotting taking place. as for the other abuse - how do people do it, we dont accept abuse to children we should not be brushing it under the carpet with the elderly!

Re: OAP Abuse

It is truly awful
....and don't forget that plenty of oap's get bed sores through substandard treatment in hospitals as well.

Re: OAP Abuse

Makes you wonder if its worth going past 65, espcially if your gonna be poor or alone.
Abusive 'care staff', company pensions not worth anything, chav teenagers on street corners, conmen and druggies nicking what little pension youve left in your sock drawer, and a failing health system youve paid into all your life doing little for you when most in need.
Logan's Run had the right idea, kill everyone off at a certain age.
I'm happy me.

Re: OAP Abuse

It isn't just in the UK. It is in Canada too. There was an article in the newspaper about it three or four months ago, and in one of my political science classes (criminal law class) we discussed elderly abuse. It is downright sickening. More reason for the death penalty.

At least, I know I'll have my parents living with me before they go to such a place.

I just wish I knew when our society lost respect for the elderly? They are frequently the victims of muggers, conmen and intruders. Why do people do these things?

I do have one thing to point out to those who indulge in this behaviour-what goes around, comes around and one day they will be old.Let them wonder what treatment may be meted out to them when it is their turn to be dependant on the care of others.

Incog.

I don't know the answer to either, but the question I have to ask is "is this actually a 'modern' thing, or is it just that we hear about it more"?

Ok, yes the structure of the family has changed now, we don't get a whole family, from (great) grandparents to newborns all living in the same house, but could it be that it happened before but was always "hushed up"?

Re: OAP Abuse

My friends grandmother was actually made worse in hospital, when she got bedsores after being left relatively untouched in bed after a simple abscess operation on her leg. It messed badly with all the muscles on her legs and cause real complications for her, which she didnt really need at 87 years of age.

Re: OAP Abuse

Guess the care homes are just following the goverments example.
Free bus pass @ 65
Free tv licence @ 75. many struggle to see or hear 100% properly by this age. many are in homes 75-80 anyway.
Free, pull alll your teeth @ 64 because you wont be able to afford the dentist fees after 65.

Care homes often employ unqualified cheep labour, often do not have 1 qualified member of staff ever. Medicine is left un monitored by doctors properly. Unqualified staff distribute the medicine.
Some homes are really poor and do such things as recycle yesterdays meal etc.
This is before we enter the lack of care for bedridden patients and physical abuse put on some residents.
Funny how they turn over several thousand plus a week but in general invest more to improve and expand the property than on their customers.

As for when did society lose respect, Id be more inclined to say when did society have respect. IMO its been corrupt and barbaric since humanity started and the good people and the vulnerable have allways been the victims.
We might be a civilisation but all to often theres plenty who are far from civilised, even if they preach as such.
