A wooden spoon had been used to tighten the shoelace around his neck.

Hmm... i just can't work out how you tighten a shoelace with a wooden spoon

Put the spoon underneath the shoelace, which is around the neck and then twist so the shoelace twists and then tightens around the neck.

You tie it(the shoelace) around your neck and insert the handle of the spoon into the shoe lace and start to twist. You need to make sure it is slack to begin with but as you twist the slack disappears.
No I've never murdered anyone.I just know how to do this.Trouble is how the heck could he do it to himself?Surely he would have passed out before he finished twisting and as soon as he blacked out wouldn't it have loosened?
Now that's three threads that have spoiled the mood of today.
Has anyone got any cheerful things to talk about?
Incog.

Strangulation will leave to bruising of the trachea and larynx, resulting in swelling that can contribute to the suffocation process. You can cause someone to suffocate with a sharp blow to the larynx and the resulting swelling (an no, I've not murdered anyone either )

Actually it's almost certainly feasible.
The brain would have retained enough oxygen for him to remain conscious long enough to finish the twisting, then if he lay down the spoon would be unable to unwind as it would be trapped against the bed (presuming it was at the back or side of the neck).
What I want to know was whether the room was locked from the inside and he was just trying to go out in a "baffling locked room mystery" style...!

I just want to know where he's hidden the Orange, Bin liner and suspenders.
May be Michael Hutchence did it?

well I've never thought to google on that before
- one article advised against doing it on your own
- and I now understand Pierre's reference to the Orange, the bin liner & the suspenders

Re: Sherlock Holmes style...
There *are* ways of doing AEA in ways that are safer than those referred to (if obliquely) in this thread, unfortunately because of the attitude of many people, those who do it are too ashamed to look for or ask for advice and, thus, end up with a tragedy.
