No more Chocolate Oranges for me!!!
Terry's plans to close York site
York has been synonymous with chocolate making for 200 years
Chocolate firm Terry's has revealed it plans to close its site in York with the loss of more than 300 jobs.
Parent company Kraft Foods is to switch production to central and western Europe in the second half of 2005.

Re: No more Chocolate Oranges for me!!!
It used to be great when I lived at York with many of our neighbours working for Rowntrees or Terrys. All that cheap chocolate from their factory shops, yum.

At this rate there will be no manufactorers in Britain. It also means that the list of products i am not boycotting is gradually rising. Damn, i always used to like them as well

Re: No more Chocolate Oranges for me!!!
I'm not one of those people who thinks that globalisation is a bad thing. Our economy is buoyant. The people who worked at the factory should be able to get new jobs. And if the new production facility for chocolate oranges is more cost effective, then in the longer term they, and the rest of us, will benefit from cheaper chocolate oranges.

Re: No more Chocolate Oranges for me!!!
I am just praying that Nestle never get their hands on Thorntons. It would be a tragedy for me.
Not because of globalisation by the way but because I think they have dubious trading practices like persuading women from developing countries with inadequate clean water to bottle feed their children and the recent debt debacle with Ethiopia.

Yes, this is another issue and a very difficult one. I know lots of people who stopped eating Kit Kats on the day Rowntrees were bought by Nestle.

I've tasted chocalate that was made in a Terrys factory about 3 hours before i got it. Its much better than stuff thats travelled and been stored for weeks on end.
As far as globalisation is concerned? I must admit that this is a close to the heart subject as i work in IT and the company that i work for has outsourced most of its IT to other countries. Did people get equilvalent jobs elsewhere? some did, some still havent after 6-12 months. The worst thing is people like me that end up having to stay behind to manage the relationship with the indian company. ITS A NIGHTMARE!!! ITs only cheaper to outsurce because the people earn a thenth of what we do, the fact that it takes 5 times longer to get anything done is irrelevent.

Are you being sarcastic? Please tell me, because if you are, I would like to negative rep you for being extremely childish.

But in reality what we will get is the same old ****.
Production prices will go down, the retail price will go up and the company will make a higher profit.
Stuff it, any company that moves out of the UK with a cost in jobs should not be allowed to trade in the UK. Especially if like Samsung they have received millions in handouts to come here in the first place.

Re: No more Chocolate Oranges for me!!!
Alan:Have you kept it below room temperature?
Sophie: I don’t think so.
Alan: Ah, right. In that case… [pushes the chocolate orange back over the counter towards Sophie]…I’m afraid you’ve invalidated the warranty. Above room-temperature it all congeals into one big dark-chocolate cricket ball. So, I’m afraid your consumer rights no longer apply. I mean, you could try Watchdog, but I think they’ve got bigger fish to fry.
