you call this being civilised ?
a well known presenter in saudia arabia has told of her experiance of being being 'beaten up' by her husband, the women suffered 13 fractures to the face, the husband is now on the run.
Quote:

It is considered a husband's rights that his wife should obey him," Abeer Mishkhas, of the Saudi English-language newspaper Arab News,
|
Quote:
|
"This can involve coercion or violence, and we know that the majority of cases of this kind go unreported and unnoticed."

this is even more stupid:

But they are still not allowed to vote, drive, own a business or travel without permission from a male guardian.

Re: you call this being civilised ?
I detailed this kind of thing on the 'Kilroy' thread. It's disgusting how many Arabs treat their womenfolk.
How about this then?

Who calls that civilised?
Hopefully the police will be able to find him and he'll be taken to court
Talking of domestic violence, I think what some police forces in America have the right idea.
If women go to the police after being attacked, then through fear etc they don't press charges, letting their husbands do it over and over, the police are able to press charges straight away, using the photographic evidence of the first attack.

There are progressive movements going on within these countries, heck even Iran has one.
Much as we'd like it to happen overnight, they often take generations.
Just look as how long it took the UK to get where we are today, and women are still restricted here.

I can imagine how sexist jokes about how a womans place is in the kitchen or bedroom are received in Arab places.....blank, puzzled looks and 'well yes, thats true'

You go back to the fifties, women were expected to stay at home, have kids, not go to university, not work, look after their men, if their man beat them then they must have done something to deserve it (When did Andy Cap stop beating his wife?).
Go to the AA museum in Basingstoke and see if you can watch the AA training films from back then. Harry Enfields "Women: Know your place" may seem comical to us today, but back then it was a scarily accurate portrayal of how women were viewed and treated.
50 years later they are still being restricted with pay, promotions, single mothers are looked down upon.
You are right though that in many cases, the worst group to be a member of is white hetrosexual male.
Rather than try and bring equality and meritocracy, the PC brigade have gone past redressing the balance and are heading over the other way.
My point was, we've taken about 100 years to get where we are today, so we can't expect other nations to do it over night.

The crucial word there was expected. Just because someone expected them to behave in a certain way, didn't mean that had to. Throughout history, women have proved if they themselves wanted something, then they could get it. I mean, like Marie Curie in the early 1900s. Or Thatcher. Not that long ago, but she was still leader of the opposition in 1975, and PM through the the 80s. Back then, the two most powerful people in the UK were women. Christ, even Pakistan has had a female PM (and that was in the 80s too). The point is, enough women have made it to prove that the only thing holding women back are their own attitudes.

I think you have a point there. It is about expectations in this country now. It's not as if there isn't an equal opportunity and encouragement for young women to move into the male dominated jobs such as engineering, plumbing and the building trade.
When I cover Craft,Design and Technology classes the traditional male female split is still prevalent.Very few girls choose to take Electronic Products and very few boys elect to study Textiles. If modern day teenagers aren't making these choices it must be down to attitude.
Incog.
