Is it really? We have had prostitution since the beginning of society (I think, IIRC it is even denounced in the Bible although I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong), and society still seems to have thrived.

Jesus' closest female friend was a prostitute.

You're not wrong - it does get a mention in the Bible. It's not called 'the oldest profession' for nothing! If you visit the ruins of ancient Ephesus in Turkey you can still see signposts on the pavements designed to point sailors to the brothels, saving them the embarrasment of asking for directions.

I know. I also do not wish this to turn into a religious debate, but although the Catholic Church has always been officially against prostitution, it did apparently encourage priests to indulge until around the mid-15th century. It has since stopped this. This is what I meant by a lot has changed. Wasn't inferring that religion is some sort of fad or fashion (although for some, it undoubtedly is, but that's another discussion).

Now, leaving rubbish like condoms (used or otherwise) is just dirty. I just wonder if these people have heard of bins..

While this doesn't have to be an exclusively religious discussion, that aspect of it is inevitable - the original question is 'Is prostitution right?' (my emphasis), not Should prostitution be legal?', which seems to be what most people have focused on so far. If you want to try to define what is right and what is wrong, you have to refer to a moral code sooner or later, and a lot of people derive their moral code from a religious faith.

On the issue of Catholic priests ... I think visiting prostitutes is among the tamer things the Vatican allowed its priests to get away with in the middle ages. Bribery, corruption, intimidation and murder would also be on my list of dodginess perpetrated by that venerable 'Christian' institution.

Re: Is prostitution right ???

There aint no "pretty women" in prostitution. These women are not out on the streets earning a crust for their kids, they are doing it because they are mostly hooked on heroin. Their pimps got them hooked on heroin and now they need to be a prostitute to buy the heroin and to make their pimp money.
The pimps are abusing these women.
Therefore if you use a prostitute you are continuing this abuse.

Strippers and lap dancers.......ive known a few who did this to get themselves through Uni......constantly pressured to have sex by their bosses.....they look on the guys that come in as scum!!

If a guy needs to relieve that sexual feeling............have a ham shank!!!

Bit of a generilasion isn't it? All the women are hooked on Heroin? None of them are trying to earn a living? All pimps make them into crack whores?
All pimps are abusing the women?

I don't think so

That may well be how life is like for them in Glasgow but I can assure you that is one of the biggest spectacularly incorrect generalisations I have ever read on this site.

Im afraid it is so.

Do you think that 20 bucks for a blow job is so appealing that prostitution is seen as a good career choice.

Dont try and make the women into anything less than victims, dont try and make the men into anything less than abusers.

Ive worked alongside people that work with prostitutes. I cant do it as im a man. They dont allow men to work with prostitutes. Some of the stories I hear are appalling how these women get into prostitution.

I must admit I'd agree with that one - The thought of paying for sex is just odd to me - sex isn't - just paying for it! I mean perhaps if you wanted something a little more 'specialist' (Graham.... ) then I can perhaps understand it, but just the type you see on the streets? And the other thing is that a lot of people drive there to look/pick them up. Now bearing in mind these people don't seem to be screaming around everywhere in first gear, I take it that they have not one, but two perfectly servicable wrists..... Or drive automatics! :pp
