remote device backup

Ello all i have 1 2003 server with exchange and SQL running
i have a need to backup the info on this server, sadley my "old" 50gig tape drive compnay went bust a while ago and win2003 support is lacking so i now have a new 24 gig HP surestore device and thast works fine ...

Anyway .i was having a think and i have an old scsi adapter and a spare client machine so i installed my old backup tape drive in that ..now comes the next stage ...id like to be able to backup the files from the server across the network and onto this tape drive sitting on the client machine (running xp right now)

so i was looking for some software that does this i know backup exec has a remote agent but im not sure if that works how i want it to ...id either like some software on the server that could "see" this tape drive on my client machine or have some software on the client that can "see" all the files on the server including (hopefully) exchange stores and sql stores.

If anyone knows of a bit of software or anything in 2003/xp that can do this id be grateful.. a backup of the files isnt so hard i could allways cheat and just copy the "shares" ..

anyway thanks if u can help

Re: remote device backup

You could stop everything and take a ghost image over the network and then do a network restore, which is sort of the same thing.

Other enterprise backup software like backup exec or HP Data Protector would do it but its not cheap. They have agents to shut down Exchange and dbases so you can back them up.

Re: remote device backup

backup exec wont work as any remote agents would need to run off a server version of windows NOT XP
