Smile No Dynamic IP?

Hi All,

Im a bit of a newbie at all this so please forgive me if I have used the wrong expressions...

I have a Netgear WGR614v2 Wireles Router, a Centrino based lappy and desktop PC with a Netgear Wireless PCI card.

Everything has been tickety-boo until just recently.

The wireless connection from router to lappy kept dropping, so I thought it was a router issue.

I reset the STB, powered up the router and hey-presto - nothing.

Normally I can run the Netgear setup wizard and the router will locate a dynamic DNS and assign the router DNS addresses and IP, but now the wizard will not talk to NTL. I have cold booted more times than I can count.

If I MAC Spoof, give the router the IP, DNS and MAC address of an NTL registered laptop then it works, but NTL now wont talk directly to the router.

Annoyingly, these details will soon change and I will have to configure the router manually again.

My question is :

1> How can I get NTL to see the router and assign it its own IP?

2> Is the above problem because I already have too many machines/router registered with NTL and if so how do I remove one of them?

I think this makes sense? Please help.

Thank you.
Tim

Re: No Dynamic IP?

OK. I now have an internet connection and all is as should be.

I set up the Router with the IP, Mac and DNS details from the laptop and left it overnight.

This morning I attempted the Setup Wizard and NTL is now talking to the router to assign it with Dynamic IP and DNS details.

Weird.

Still have to MAC spoof though.

Tim

Check that you are up to date with Windows updates (not just Critical Updates, the optional ones too), as there is a wireless update which addresses similar issues. If the desktop stays in service while the laptop drops, then it's not a router issue, it's a laptop issue.

If you put a fixed IP configuration into the router WAN port, then eventually the NTL system will notice the lack of DHCP renewals and cut it off: the router should be left with a DHCP configuration on its WAN port. You should never need to run the Netgear wizard after the initial installation.

Re: No Dynamic IP?

Hi Timos,

Just noticed your post on my thread. I too have no hair left.

I upgraded the firmware to the latest (2.15 IIRC from netgear.com website), and have had a similar issue described by yourself.

I put it down to my idiot brother coming back from holiday and messing about on my PC whilst i was at work.
As you described, i entered the IP etc manually, got a connection then switched back to DHCP settings and it communicated with the STB again.

Has been working since, but i have read about similar probs to 'ours' on an american board about netgear products. Seems another firmware may be released soon.

Cheers anyway
Phil.
