Linksys BEFSR41 - Request Help

I recently purchased Linksys BEFSR41 4 port hub and router.

I installed it and it worked fine, for about 20 minutes!

This happens all the time, after about 20 - 30 minutes the internet connection is dropped. It only returns after the router is manually reset by pulling the power.

Anyone else experience this?

Are there settings in the routers configuration I can change to fix this or is this how it is?

DJ.

I would suggest that you go to the linksys website and download the latest firmware, I seem to recall having similar issues when I got mine, and a firmware update did the trick...

get the firmware from here

(Just because it is new does not mean it has the latest - they sit on shelves for a fair while these days... )

There are several different versions of the BEFSR41 - examine the label on the underside to check which one you have. The firmware for Version 3 is mutually incompatible with the firmware for earlier versions, and you must not load the firmware of one into a router of the other sort.

Apart from that proviso, update your formware to the latest version, which is 1.45.7 for versions earlier than 3, and 1.04.17 for version 3. All available from http://www.linksys.com/.

Re: Linksys BEFSR41 - Request Help

Your next port of call should be the Linksys site and use the Linkchat support system (currently online now) at http://www.linksys.com/support/default.asp

Then you can ask them directly before you flash a new OS to it.

Re: Linksys BEFSR41 - Request Help

Did you manually set up the router (or mess about with the settings page)?
Try resetting to defaults and reinstall using the setup wizzard from the CD (I think you hold the reset button for about 30sec or something for a full reset).

Incidentaly, can you connect reliably direct to the cable modem without the router as per normal?

My router is the BEFSR41 ver 3. I have upgraded the firmware to 1.04.17.
Will let you know if there are any more problems.

Re: Linksys BEFSR41 - Request Help

This morning the status of my internet connection was 'disconnected', even though all cables were in place.

Any ideas why this would be?

Angry Re: Linksys BEFSR41 - Request Help

I have version 2 of this router and I have had nothing but problems with it disconnecting since I (foolishly) upgraded the firmware to 1.45.7 from something like 1.42.2.

From what I can gather, the router leases an IP address via DHCP from the CM / STB - In my case I have STB BB with 1Mb service. In the setup screens it states that the lease lasts exactly 4 days. After 4 days, guess what happens? It disconnects.

Sometimes I can log in via http://192.168.1.1/ and release and renew and this brings my connection back, but most of the time the router locks completely and I have to power-cycle to get my internet connection back.

I think there must be a bug in the firmware and / or compatibility issues with the STB BB service.

Whatever, it's very frustrating, particularly when it worked flawlessly before upgrading the firmware.

Re: Linksys BEFSR41 - Request Help

Strange since I did at one period of time this year experience a minor snag with the router locking up but since I got the latest firmware it been plain sailing since then. I DO have all IP's address on static cos of certain programs needing static port forwarding.

oh well, it was worth a try, all I can suggest, in that case is to either follow up the link provided by zoombini or try looking in the Linksys section of the dslreports forum

Which bit of your system, precisely, told you it was disconnected?

If it was your PC, then the problem lies in your ethernet card, or the cable to the router. Maybe you need to examine the ethernet duplex settings of the card.

The pc yes.

I'm using onboard LAN. What should the duplex settings be? I don't have any of these problems when connecting straight to my modem.

Assume for the moment that the duplex auto-negotiation between your LAN card and the router is not working (quite a common occurrence). In the advanced properties of your LAN card hardware settings, force the duplex setting to be (say) half-duplex rather than auto-negotiate, and see if that solves you problem. Then try full-duplex, and see if that works too.
