Linux Cleartype Equivalent.

Is there an equivalent to MS's cleartype in Linux? I'm currently running Knoppix 5.01 in a virtual machine. The fonts are so thin it's killing my eyes!

Re: Linux Cleartype Equivalent.

You can use Windows fonts in X...

See here for more hints on improving font appearance.

Re: Linux Cleartype Equivalent.

About the same with Ubuntu (GNome) and Kubuntu (KDE) then

I would have thought KDE would've turned on AA on the fonts by default. You can check for that under the KDE Control Panel > Appearance > Fonts > Tick "Use anti-aliasing for fonts". If it's already ticked, click on "Configure" and check that "Exclude Range" isn't ticked.

The fonts probably won't look as good as in Windows but it's better than the bog-standard ones (until you get TrueType fonts installed).

Re: Linux Cleartype Equivalent.

Yeah, the Microsoft True Type core fonts can be used under Knoppix to vastly improve the display.

Have a look here at how to install the msttcorefonts (Microsoft True Type Core Fonts) package...
