Re: Vista compatability

Winroute is weird though. Couldn't work out how to get that to block on a per-app basis not a per-port basis.

As for Comodo, that's still an alpha. Encouraging a full release looks to be imminent, though.

Re: Vista compatability

The Combined Community Codec Pack works an absolute treat with Vista 32 and 64 bit editions. Had a few codec issues tried a few other packs that said they were good for 64 bit mainly and tbh was not . So I the tried the above again (although iirc they do not specify ready for 64 bit) and they do everything. Ive set it to control AVI as well as my mkv and easily set up the AC3 in ffdshow to route DD5.1 and DTS through spidif

Re: Vista compatability

Newsbin now has a specific 64 bit edition. Seems to work well in Vista, and is apparently slightly faster than the 32 bit edition.

You do need a full licence for newsbin though. It won't upgrade the Newsbin for Giganews edition.

Re: Vista compatability

I've not read the whole thread so this may have been covered but I've managed to get quite a bit of very old software and games working on Vista through using Virtual PC 2007 to create a Windows 98SE Emulation and then sharing the required folders with the Virtual PC. Been happily playing old Windows 95 and DOS games doing this.

Re: Vista compatability

I've been running Vista for a couple of months now and so far have had no compatibility issues, I mostly run Dreamweaver web based application and photo editing packages. I have not go around to checking its compatibility with my audio software yet though, no doubt that will show a few cracks. I hear that most are waiting until the release of the first service pack.

Re: Vista compatability

Well, finally solved a long standing problem (which I believe I posted about here, but can't find).

Basically the problem is that my Viewsonic VX2025wm monitor (which is otherwise an absolutely lovely monitor) didn't work with my GeForce 8800GTS using drivers from NVidia.

It seems the problem was to do with the monitor returning incorrect EDID data.

[u]What's EDID data and why is it important?[/b]

Modern monitors (well, any monitor build since the late 90s) store information about their own capabilities. The VESA realised that it would be better if the data returned was in a standard format.

The current format is called EDID.

It's important so that Windows can use the information in determining display resolution, refresh rates and display timinings.

The problem (in my case) is my display was returning the wrong information. It was specifying itself as an analogue display, thus causing vista to shut down the DVI port. Not sure why XP wasn't affected, other then it seems a little more relaxed about these things than Vista.

The solution? I found one at http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?s...1&#entry206501 . As I said, my monitor is a VX2025wm, but other monitors may have the same problem.

There's a couple of things to note about the fix.

1) It requres a fully licenced edition of Entech's PowerStrip monitor management system. Obviously, there are various ways to obtain one, but here, I can only really talk about purchasing it.

2) Powerstrip, when the fix is run *will* overwrite the montor's EDID EEPROM. As with BIOS upgrades, if something grows wrong, you run the risk of "bricking" the device.

Re: Vista compatability

Hello,
Have just built new PC:

Q6600-CPU
Asus 8800gt 512Mb-Gfx
Asus P5K Premium WiFi-Motherboard
Antec 900 Case.
Vista Ultimate 32bit.

Now thats all i have for the moment, everything is on board, I.E Sound ect

The problem is i have built this PC for mainly gaming and have installed COD4, BUT when i click on icon to start game, i get the COD4 banner then the screen goes blank which is normal then i get an error, "Iw3mp.exe has stopped working".
Now i have done the usual in looking at various forums, i have seen a few referring to sound driver type issues have followed advice given to no avail.

Only advice i see to make this work, is put XP in a separate partition on hard drive and use this to play COD4????

Re: Vista compatability

Have you tried right click then run as administrator, worked for me.

Just googled and if you have a Soundblaster X-fi card on vista you have to disable Alchemy, or any audigy card using alchemy.

Hi, no separate sound card, but have soudblaster on motherboard, so will try and find Alchemy and give that a go.
