Re: Vista compatability

I'd like to mention something to any composers out there.

If you expect better or the same level MIDI support in Vista as from 2000/XP, think again. The MIDI control panel is gone - literally - gone. You can no longer change what the MIDI out device is, so unless your software can set the output manually, you're stuck with the Microsoft SoftSynth (which is absolutely pants).

Also, gameport support is removed - so you'd better get a USB to MIDI cable if you want to even try MIDI on Vista (this also means people with joysticks that use the gameport are now screwed).

Because of those reasons I went back to 2000.

Even on an Audigy2 with the extra driver software?

I'm not sure if the CD software works. I installed the latest Audigy 2 ZS driver and couldn't find anything to change the MIDI out device - nothing in the Audio Console (which I wouldn't bother using as it constantly locks up).

I thought Creative had been saying they'd found some way around the Vista audio stack, so as to allow proper audio hardware support?

X-Fi only unless the game uses OpenAL.

Rhizome - is there no AudioHQ then? Looks like I won't be getting it until they sort this... I'm a big Sibelius (4) user.

Not with the driver, and as I said, I haven't tested the CD software (may act strange due to the new audio API in Vista).

Re: Vista compatability

O&O defrag 8.6 pro works nicely. However it appears Vistas own defragmentor does a nice job on its own .Ive got it set to auto defrag on a daily basis at 3 pm so the pc is always on at this time although often downloading or me browsing and I notice not drop in performance when running either Vista or O&O set on stealth. O&O only found fragments on my working OS drive which is to be expected and none on my other 1.3 terabytes(have a total of 1.5)

One final nail in the Vista Audio = Crap coffin then really. Thanks for the tip off.

Have to wait until there's a solution...

Re: Vista compatability

Vista Audio link from Creative.

Drivers for Audigy expected Q1 2007 - which is up to the end of this month. Sounds interesting.

Re: Vista compatability

For people having problems with the latest Creative Sound card drivers.

If you check the sound card properties in the Control Panel (dont use the mixer it is crap)

For some reason the driver is persistant to say your output is digital when for most it isnt.

Goto that device, and click properties and then to the supported formats tab, check DTS audio only and then Apply and Ok.

While there to get your mic working, goto the output tab, and remove the SP-DIF if you dont have, and any other listed, and leave only the mic. Your mic should work now.

---------- Post added at 15:57 ---------- Previous post was at 15:53 ----------

Also for older games, that wont work when installed.

Try this, Install with only one Folder path.

For example say your installing I dont know Dogs5 or the likes.

Install to

C:\Dogs5

This should run your game/program.

Re: Vista compatability

Just had a pig of a time with a customers new vista pc and a canon MP130 printer/scanner. Vista was great and the file transfer worked brilliantly. Installed the canon vista driver and the printer worked fine.

However on rebooting the pc freezes with options to continue or repair! both options result in a blank black screen.

As soon as you unplug the usb cable to the printer the pc boots fine. Plugging the usb back in once the pc has booted is also fine resulting in normal printer operation until the next reboot!

v frustrating

Sounds to me more like bad USB drivers or Ports, was the jumpers on correctly on the motherboard?

Re: Vista compatability

imo if it works ok when the pc is on and you plug the printer in and only crashes when the printer is attached and pc is booted the usb ports ok but its a compat problem with a simple solution which will save money and thats just power down the printer. Have you tried booting the with the printer attached and switched off???

Re: Vista compatability

Spent this afternoon reloading XP back onto my main PC.

Vista...aaarghhhh. In my place of work we've also dismissed it for use (we've around 300 PCs).
