MAC OS X Users
I've seen numerous recommendations that MAC users use the text base darwin client for better performance
Quote:
And CPU cycles with the GUI version for Mac OS X. Just use the command line version. It's a LOT FASTER!
The fIle is "powerpc-apple-darwin1.2" at:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/unix.html
If your not on Dial-up it's easy. Follow the instructions to install and then use CronniX or some other Cron interface to set it up as an automatic system event that starts on it's own after startup. It will automatically upload results and download new files.
You can even install multiple instances (in separate folders) for Dual Processor Macs and crunch two files at the same time. Also, since it is a background App it is always running and only takes over CPU cycles when they are available. You can adjust how friendly it plays with other apps using the -nice command. I use:
10 * * * * root cd /Library/setiathome/; ./setiathome -nice 8
It starts at 10 minutes after the hour and is root so no matter who is logged in it still runs, even if it's just sitting on the login screen. Set yours up how it works best for you.
The GUI Screensaver wastes so much energy it increases the process time by 2 to 4 times. If you can live without the GUI, it's worth it

Re: Team SETI@cableforum
My CPU is running at 65.C with an ambient temp of 37.C on the main computer.
It has been up for days running at 100% though...

Er, yeah Just realised - it would be possible for several non-networked PCs to submit results for one individual. The email address and password would have to be shared. It's sort of like cheating in that it appears that an individual has processed loads of units when it's actually a team of people all submitting results to the same email address (SETI individual). They should really register as individuals and form a team. There's no team hierarchy though - several small teams can't form an uber team, maybe that's why.

Joining
I'm Scotty, my total CPU time is high because I have a dinosaur "nibbling" away at the WU's using SETI@home CLI 3.03 and a notebook "crunching" away at the WU's and finishes them off in about 2-5 hours
I bet loads of people have said this, but I think it's a good point:
If it is just us, seems like an awful waste of space.
EDIT: By the way, where can I get the images you have in your signature to tell you your results so far on SETI@Home? Please tell me

look back in the thread
- can the xml of my stats be turned into a 'proper' rss feed for my website?

EDIT 2: Never mind, I got it going, only problem is I wish I could use the team stats, but our team doesn't seem to show in the list

Yep Iv'e tried that too - I'm sure there's something else we can get running instead.
At the moment, in overclocker speak, I'm concentrating on "borging" all the work PC that are left switched on overnight. If it works that should boost my numbers nicely, ta very much. Being the sysadmin has it's advantages

Re: Team SETI@cableforum
Odd, my other PC seems to get a lower CpF than my notebook, but my other PC is a Pentium 1 166 200MHZ, and my notebook is a mobile AMD AthlonXP 1900+ 1.6ghz?
Weird don't you think?

Re: Team SETI@cableforum
Scroll to the bottom of here:
http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/links_addons.html
And there's loads of "stats display" add-ons. I've not noticed this before - I stopped scrolling when I got to the "Add-ons for UNIX client" section, thinking that after that it would be all Unix/Linux stuff There's even an English version of the stats image generator, for those without Google

The statment says that the system cannot find SETI@cableforum on the berkley servers. Weird I know.

Does it step the processing speed down on idle. Perhaps SETI does not get it to ramp up again.

Re: Team SETI@cableforum
I have it set to "Normal" priority on my other PC, so it gets most of the CPU to it's self. I just don't understand why the "efficiency" of my older PC is better than my notebook?

Just a thought..
Since Seti only runs when the processor isn't being used, Ctrl Alt Delete, and goto processes, and check that you haven't got any adverse processes running, adware or anything.
My brother's PC (unknown to me) was overloaded with it, and when I installed seti, it took an age to do a WU, checked the processes, and got rid of most of the unwanted ones.. and the WU's were completed in an expected time.
