Good links to QNX btw
many reasons, sure its not as fast , you need a ZEN or something for that.
http://lists.xensource.com/archives/.../msg00003.html

but if you have a base windows machine sitting around doing nothing then slap a virtual x86 on that and be happy to run a few servers from that.

good for kit you cant get going quickly such as druchii has, setup your system and dd that to a real HD when your ready.

keeping seperate development systems running and interchangable without lib hell.

BTW its RTP not qnx, qnx is the company, RTP 6.0/1/2 is the free OS version that Dan (CEO,dodge) promised the Amiga lads,we used/advocated/developed it in phinixi, aka PPC aka PDC.

Sun CEO sets open source Java time

Paul Krill Wed Oct 25, 4:09 PM ET

San Francisco (InfoWorld) - SAN FRANCISCO -- Demonstrating a perhaps more aggressive path than anticipated, Sun Microsystems is set to announce the open-sourcing of the core Java platform within 30 to 60 days, Sun President and CEO Jonathan Schwartz said at the Oracle OpenWorld conference on Wednesday morning.

if The core platform encompasses the Standard Edition of Java, and it will be offered via an open source format under an OSI (Open Source Initiative)-approved license, likely the same one used for Sun's open source Solaris OS.

Sun officials, including Rich Green, Sun executive vice president for software, have talked about Java being offered via open source in stages later this year and into 2007. Parts of it, such as the Java Enterprise Edition, already are available via open source, with the GlassFish application server constituting the open source enterprise variant.

Under pressure from the community at large, Sun officials announced at the JavaOne conference in May, also in San Francisco, that Java would be made open source. But they did not provide a specific time frame.

Schwartz, who said he is in his 184th day as CEO since taking over for Scott McNealy, stood atop his open source soapbox to tout Sun's ongoing open source efforts.

"We announced about a year-and-a-half we were open-sourcing Solaris and making it freely available and a strong trend emerged," Schwartz said. Sun, he said, crossed the 6 million-license barrier for Solaris about two to three weeks ago; 70 percent of Solaris licenses are now deployed on computers from rivals Dell, HP, and IBM, he said.

"Frankly, our relationship with those three vendors has been transformed. They are now channel partners for us," with Sun able to deliver Solaris support for those customers, Schwartz said.

Sun's relationship with Oracle, meanwhile, has grown stronger, he said. "Between the two companies, I don't think our partnership has even been stronger than it is now," Schwartz said. The relationship was viewed to have taken a nosedive in recent years as Oracle emphasized Linux solutions over Sun's Solaris alternative. But now, Sun is using Oracle applications internally.

Schwartz also offered perspectives on a variety of technology trends. He noted that everyday, new devices besides PCs and servers are being networked, and he cited an amusement park's usage of RFID tags in dolls given to children. The dolls are then used to track children and the formation of lines at the park. Oil rigs also are being outfitted, he said.

"It’s not just people joining the Internet," Schwartz said.
Sun, Schwartz said, focuses on customers who see technology as offering a competitive advantage rather than just as a cost center.

The company through its Sun Fire servers has become the industry's fastest-growing provider of x64 servers, he said.

Special-purpose systems are dying out, Schwartz said. "At this point, you can take general-purpose infrastructure and replace almost all custom infrastructure," he said.

Schwartz also cited how his dentist has a server on hand to track patient information. Over time, a service operator will offer this service and save dentists from needing their own servers, according to Schwartz."

Re: Which Linux?

Hmmm Sun is playing catch up and they have been on their back foot the last two/three years have been disastrous for Sun with the number of Java quality Frameworks that have been released. EJB3 is an example of reaction not innovation :o

Open source is teaching beautifully built OO patterns to the mother itself - Sun.

Hardware wise you are well aware of the speed impovements offered by Intel and AMD all they need to do build a viable stable SMP offering and Sun will really be crapping their pants. Intels Itanium was too soon in my opinion but quad core xeons are out next year right ? If they can get the SMP model right then they can directly hit Sun.

Tis only a matter of time

Re: Which Linux?

I had a quick try the other day of an Ubuntu 6.06 Live CD which came (as an ISO) on a mag's cover DVD, & it's got me interested now in trying Linux properly.

As the Live CD I tried was Ubuntu, I've decided to give that a go, but download the new version (6.10).

I've done some Googling, & looked at some Ubuntu sites, & am currently dreading messing around with partitions.

But...quick question, Ubuntu or Kubuntu? i.e. Gnome or KDE?

Is there really much in it between them? Or is it just personal preference?

If it's just personal prefence, both have pros & cons etc., then what makes you choose one or the other?

If you install Ubuntu, & then decide you want to try KDE, is it easy to stick KDE on there too & switch between that & Gnome? (or vice versa)

Re: Which Linux?

Mostly personal preference mate :

At the end of the day the OS underneath is the same for all Kubunti, ubuntu, xubuntu. Debian based.

I too recently converted from windows and tried all of them and settled for kubuntu with fluxbox (fluxbox is my windows manager and load up kde's kicker just so that I have a menu that I can customize)

I've found KDE to be more comprehensive than Gnome too

Re: Which Linux?

I have spent 10 hours plus now trying to configure wireless access with WPA through Ubuntu and its clear that nobody anywhere has a definitive correct method of doing this.

I've tried to get this working - i really have - but have had limited success.

What i find really, really disgraceful though is that some documentation assumes that you have an internet connection to get the dependencies needed to get WPA to work, how that's acceptable is beyond me. You try getting Network Manager to work on Ubuntu (Edgy) for example.

I really want to get this working - but 10 hours of trying later im still not any closer and seem to be running round in circles.

Totally disheartened by this mess.

Check that your card supports WPA maybe the linux driver you are using doesn't support it

[1] Check from the command prompt :
$ dmesg

dmesg | grep -i wpa
[17179600.152000] wlan0: encryption modes supported: WEP; TKIP with WPA, WPA2, WPA2PSK; AES/CCMP with WPA, WPA2, WPA2PSK

[2] now use /sbin/wpa_supplicant configured thus :

more /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
# example
# source from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WPAHowTo
network={
# ssid="NetworkEssid"
ssid="T1-Private"
# scan_ssid=1 # only needed if your access point uses a hidden ssid
proto=WPA
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
# pairwise=TKIP
# group=TKIP
psk="key here"
}

[3] apply wpa_sup to /etc/network/interfaces
more /etc/network/interfaces

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
#iface eth0 inet dhcp
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.0.139
gateway 192.168.0.1
netmask 255.255.255.0

auto eth1
iface eth1 inet dhcp
#iface eth1 inet static
#address 192.168.0.139
#gateway 192.168.0.1
#netmask 255.255.255.0

auto eth2
iface eth2 inet dhcp

auto ath0
iface ath0 inet dhcp

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
pre-up /sbin/wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf - &
post-down /usr/bin/pkill wpa_supplicant

#auto wifi0

---------- Post added at 12:27 ---------- Previous post was at 12:16 ----------

If thats too much then try downloading wpagui via synaptic or try a search for wpa within synaptic you should find a tool that'll help you configure wpa_sup

Forgive me if its a stupid question but have you tried asking on ubuntuforums.org ?
Also have you tried NDIS Wrapper? It lets you use windows wireless drivers in Ubuntu. Hope this helps.

Matt D - I've only tried Gnome but I would suggest you are probably best of using that as its the Ubuntu default so there's more community support for it.

No, i have looked through all the other posts from people with the same issue though.

And i do use Ndiswrapper for my driver, i can get the adapter to work and see some access points, its just the WPA part i cant get working, wpa_status just shows SCANNING...

Maybe it would help to bring the interface down as root and bring it back up as root...

from a terminal

sudo -s
ifconfig (shows your your interface)
ifdown wlan0 (or whatever your interface is)
ifup wlan0

I find the gui hangs because it cant bring the interface up as root.

I've downloaded the Ubuntu 6.10 iso now, so will give that a whirl later once I've backed everything up.

I found some instructions for installing KDE on Ubuntu, so I'll give that a try if I'm not keen on Gnome.

From TBR's posts it sounds like I may later have issues getting WPA to work though
