Re: Which Linux?

I gave Ubuntu a go the other evening but when I booted from the CD to try it before I installed it all I got was a corrupted screen in magenta and yellow. Nothing but vertical bars broken in different places all over the screen!

Guess it doesnt like my gfx card (gforce 6600GT).

Re: Which Linux?

Strange, I've got the same card and it works fine for me. In fact, using Sabayon Linux, I get the full eye candy effect of XGL and Beryl... imagine Vista on LSD and that's what it's like with my 6600GT.

You should be able to select the VESA driver when you boot, which isn't as good-looking as the Nvidia driver, but will at least allow you to boot the system and then you can work at getting the proper drivers working.

It's based on Gentoo, but whereas Gentoo users normally have to compile everything Sabayon comes with everything pre-compiled. It's probably not as efficient as a system that's been compiled for your own system, but I'm not worried about that as it saves a helluva lot of time

ps - thanks for the heads-up about the new Ubuntu

Re: Which Linux?

Just making a guest appearance....

Soz for the sudden departure but I wasn't serous about being a regular poster but then realised that hell I've made 100 stupid posts already !

Tis quite addictive for a first time forum user like me... Anyway having tried looking around for a new home I realised what a nice bunch you lot are and so I'll stay albeit low key.

Question in hand : What's the best Linux !

Thanks to you guys I am converted... I'm primarily using my laptop for virtually everything the faster Windoze XP desktop is gathering dust.

So what Linux works for me ? Being on a laptop I needed something fast and light that was able to take an instance of eclipse sucking 300meg along with mail, browser, JBoss server. I also wanted good package support which makes installing new software a breeze unless your happy with make menuconfig; make -j51 dep; make -j51 bzImage crap....

My bias went to the *buntu/Debian series of distros which offers around 20,000 available online packages for you to install and customise your instance of linux.

I've tried
Ubuntu : Rubbish with bundled gnome DE : Too top heavy good for the newbs.
Xubuntu : Again loaded with XFCE it was a little heavy too
Fluxbuntu : Alpha release it was lightweight but fluxbox was less integrated than the mainsteam *buntu releases - doh - Defeats the purpose of having fluxbox in the first place.
PCLinuxOS : Not quite there not as much in terms of package support. semi resource heavy.
SUSE, Redhat : They've had their day.
A few micro distros like Damn Small Linux/DSL-n/Puppy linux etc but their package support is not great

Who won ?

It had to be a KDE based distro as KDE gives you a lot more in terms of system configuration tools that even the newbies will have no problem finding and or using.

Kubuntu absolutely sweet even in full mode I just love Konqueror its faster than firefox and doubles as an excellent file manager - kick nautilus and windows file explorer in the teeth.

Having said that I did strip Kubuntu down to what I needed.
Killed crap out of rc.d boot time is now 40 seconds compared to the 1minute I was getting when I first installed it.

Login manager is XDM killed off KDE.
Windows Manger is Fluxbox but I did also start up a few KDE items of use without loading up the full desktop environment.

ie Fluxbox loads up and starts kicker enabling me to access the whole of KDE just in case I need it.

From boot to the point where I have my desktop up and running I am using just 130Meg of memory kinda sweet.

Cheers boys

ROFL and I'm on a poxy 900Mhz Centrino (actually centrinos are pretty good) with 786Meg or so RAM am only using 300Meg for web, thunderbird, shells, adept (which likes to suck memory).

I'm telling you man if I install the same setup on my desktop it would really fly.

Installing linux the way I have done gives 'Portable Desktop' a whole new meaning.

Indeed it does! I have MSN open, Firefox 2 open (9 tabs) and Winamp open. Stupid mem usage tbh.

If only i could install Linux on this PC, i don't have anyway of getting it to recognise the SATA side of this PC... All LiveCD's and installs crash out on me.

Oh yeh forgot I'm listening to tunes too

Bummer that does sound strange are there any linux drivers for your SATA controller : If you can get them and load them into the kernel you should be set to rock n roll.

Whats your mobo / SATA controller ?

Well, my mobo Is the Gigabyte 965p-DS3, supposedly native SATA. I've no idea on the controller off the top of my head
