Re: nas
I'm pretty sure that unless you have a Windows Domain, you cannot store the profiles on a remote drive (of any sort, NAS or not).
Howerver, you should be able to move the "My Documents" folders on to a NAS.

Re: nas
You need to be able to configure samba as a PDC in order for it to act as a domain, thus store profiles on it. However you will find home profiles that are free to grow will be too big for network storage. So you it may be better just to schedule backups of the profiles to the NAS drive.
More information on configuring samba can be found here: http://us5.samba.org/samba/
If the NAS drive is locked and you cannot SSH into it then you are locked to the manufacturer’s defaults, which won’t allow you to modify the samb.conf file.
Hope this helps.

Re: nas
Nick, I know what you are trying to do but it won't work through a NAS. Even with a domain running and running roaming profiles you need to have a good network setup and know what you are doing as it can be messy business. Also you find as your profile grows the slower it takes to log into windows, just not worth the hastle, best bet is if you get a NAS use it to store the documents on and setup each users my documents to point to the NAS.

Effectively a NAS drive is a mini computer, most run lnux therefore it is quite possble to open them up.
Samba is pretty powerful, but as said above unless you are willing to learn UNIX type commands as well as read in detail how to configure samba / POL files then it’s not worth the hassle.
If you have the will-power to stick at it, then by all means give it ago. If you are into this side of things then you may find interesting.
You can setup samba to work as domain controller, albeit not as easy or as functional as a proper windows based domain controller. If you did plan on using roaming profiles then you would most defiantly need to configure them correctly. Samba allows you to upload pol(s) file that will assist in doing this.
It is something worth "looking into" if you are interested and willing to learn - also with UNIX Linux patience is a must if you have never used it before.
But if your wanting a quick first time solution then a basic NAS with shares is your best bet.

Re: nas
i had a quick look through and didnt see any NAS listed, just search some more on nas and try a selection, perhaps you will find a good one and be able to then reqmend some to the readers on your testing.
