Running a website on windows 2003
Is the Windows 2003 Web Edition the best for running a website from your "local box", i used to run it on Linux but I wanna have a go on Windows 2003 ? Any pointers ?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Running a website on windows 2003
If you are just going to be running a web site and nothing else (like not looking into active directory etc) then sure, just go for the web edition.
If you're hoping to learn how 2003 works, then go for standard.
IIS6 mmmmmm yummy

Just bear in mind that out of the box everything is switched OFF - you need to turn components on, M$ attempt at making the OS more secure (Ie. if you enabled web services then it's your fault).
Enjoy!

LMAO I like that
But they do issue many updates for security
Far 2 many
But I find that win 2k and a firewall fine for that
after all we are Microsofts unpaid beta testers LOL
I have not yet had the pleasure or misfortune of playing with win2k3 yet

Would you rather they didn't release any?
I know, I know, we'd all rather they fixed it before they released it, but if they did that we'd have to wait an extra 3-4 years or so and MAC's would get the lead unless of course they did the same and fixed all their bugs before they released the next MAC/OS
PS 2003 is luverly, unless you decide to reboot alot
W2K3: Why are you rebooting?
Me: Because I bloody well feel like it
REBOOT
W2K3: Why was this server rebooted?
Me: Rassum frassum give me strenght! I just bloodly told you why you dumb computer!

LOL, yes I did find that rather irritating, but I normally re-boot using remote control software which avoids the question. IIS6 is excellent and knocks the spots off previous versions.
All webserver software has security problems requiring updates - just ask NTL, they don't run the community site on IIS ......

Re: Running a website on windows 2003
Ok okey I got it working on IIS5.1 on WinXP and I got a problem with www.nonbeanbaggers.co.uk/forums/ basically not letting anyone on. It is working from the inside but obviously I need it working on the outside. 403 HTTP error comes back. Any idea how I might fix this. I need to do something with permissions but not sure what.
Thanks

Have you allowed anonymous access to the site (site properties, directory security tab I think).

Re: Running a website on windows 2003
Anonymous Access is allowed for the whole site.
EDIT: D'oh I am a stupid git, I obviously needed to link to a page like index.htm in the forums it works now.

Does the defined anonymous user have access (NT read permission) to the sites folders. Also, is the correct default document set up.
