Home security (camera)
Someone has broken my car lock but is too hopeless to actually get the door open AGAIN. I'm thinking about some kind of home security camera, but don't know where to start.
Here's my simple setup:
NTL broadband (from stb) via ethernet into wired hardware firewall/switch (used for VPN into work) and is in a room to the rear of the house. My car is out the front. As I have no other PCs there is no network, but a wired one could be done with the existing wired switch.
I don't really want to set up wireless, but I could I guess. Also, my other half is *allergic* to wires around the place!
I guess I'm not bothered about high quality video - captured images uploaded to my webspace or e-mailed to my work e-mail address would be good enough?
Now that I'm thinking about it, maybe I should set something up to the rear of the house too? Oh I don't know.
Any thought or tips anyone? Thanks.
Also, are there any legal implications of setting up a camera? Do I need big signs "Warning - these premises are protected by 24 hour cameras" or something???
Thanks all.

Re: Home security (camera)
You can get IP webcams for about £80 that are wireless and means that you can view from any web page.
I think the one I looked at was a Linksys one.

Re: Home security (camera)
The main problem is proving your camera is not in the field of view, or intended for the purpose of, invading the privacy of your neighbours.
I'm not sure the best course of action, probably a visit to your CAB is in order.
I can recommend a wireless camera, but they're expensive beasts: http://www.ipcctvcameras.co.uk/IV_LI...pecDetails.htm

I'd have to get a wireless receiver, as there's no way I'd be allowed to have cables anywhere. It's all going to be pretty expensive. I just don't know if it's worth it in terms of time, trouble and money.
Thanks for the reply.

Hmm. Good point. Have to do some research.

Re: Home security (camera)
I can recommend those cheap wireless cameras that you can get off ebay like this.
They provide colour footage to in a phone output that plugs into many vid capture cards (fits my pctv card ok) Works a treat as a web cam or through speacialist web cam software such as webcamxp which can auto record on movement etc.
Might be able to power off a mobile phone car charger, It's so small you could get a cheap mobile phone adaptor to power it and convert a air freshner to house it.

Re: Home security (camera)
You do need a sign saying that people are being filmed, and there are some other bits of info you need too (to do with the dpa iirc).
It might be cheaper to just get the sign and not bother with the rest

According to Information Commissioner's Code of Practice at:
http://www.ico.gov.uk/documentUploads/cctvcop1.pdf
it is anticipated that you will not have to register for the dpa.
It is anticipated that you won't - grey area or what?
