Question HDD swap.

I have a shuttle pc at the moment, can I buy an identical model shuttle and swap over the hard drive or will XP detect it is another machine and not like it?

Re: HDD swap.

If its identical I couldn't see a problem. But why? are you going to clone the drive ? If you do make sure you use ghost or similar otherwise it will not boot.Of course you will need a second licence for xp to do this legally

Re: HDD swap.

If it is XP, it will recognise the new machine as a different PC. XP uses various bits of hardware info to determine a new PC. Not sure of the details, but I believe this includes Motherboard serial, HDD serial (the same if you swap it over), CPU ID, Network MAC address, etc.

So chances are that when you put the HDD in the new machine Windows XP will ask you to re-activate the product.
