Can you help please?
I am not really technically minded but the drawer of my DVD player on my PC has died. I would like to now replace both the defunct DVD player and the CD rewriter with a DVD Rom and a DVD rewriter. I am told by one person that it is "simply" a matter of taking off the back, undoing four screws for each, unplugging each (not necessarily in that order? ), connecting the new equipment and replaing the screws and the back. Someone else has told me that it is "a very big job and requires quite a lot of re-wiring". Obviously I don't want to spend money where I don't have to, so your advice would be most appreciated. Please don't reply in technical terms though - I would rather you were user friendly! Also, any suggestions (if this is allowed on this site) as to where I could look for reasonable parts - apart from e-bay please.

Re: Can you help please?
The first person is right, it's pretty simple.
Reasonable parts- PC World for high street, on the net Overclockers.co.uk, dabs.com, savastore.com ...

Re: Can you help please?
Agreed it's not difficult. If you can get your PC casing open then that's half the job done already.
Normally it's just a case of powering the PC down,
open the case up,
unscrew the old drive from it's mounting point,
pull it forwards from the casing, remove cables,
plug cables into the new drive in the same positions as they were in the old drive (more often than not they only fit one way round and into one place so you can't mix up where they go),
place new drive into case mounting,
replace screws and tighten to hold in position.
Sometimes if the cables aren't very long you have to remove them from the old drive while it's in it's mounting and plug them into the new one once it's in position but it's not dificult at all.
Is it a tower casing or desktop? Desktops can be harder but only due to the restricted space within the casing to get your hands/ fingers.

Re: Can you help please?
All that matters is the setting of the drive (little plugs on the back) they have to be set the same as your old one, be it master or slave.

Re: Can you help please?
Wow only joined this forum today and am thrilled with the response to my query - thank you so much . Yes it is a tower that I have. And nothing wrong with the English - it is better than my technical knowledge of computers!

The more I know, the more I forget.
The more I forget the less I know ....
SO WHY STUDY?

There's some info here with pictures to show how easy it is really
http://www.fonerbooks.com/r_cd.htm
Before you install you can always ask for clarification of anything you are unsure of

Re: Can you help please?
Thank you for that link Paul. I have just had a look at it and was so pleased to see the pictures as well. At this rate I can see I will be going into business building computers and selling them !! I am just so grateful to you all. Thanks a lot, and for the welcome too.

Re: Can you help please?
I tried www.overclockers.co.uk and started to order what I wanted (sounded too good to be true with the prices and delivery!). However when I was asked to enter my card details I noticed that this is not a secure site . So it is back to the drawing board with your other suggestions thanks.

Re: Can you help please?
Paul and I have both ordered stuff from then and never had any problems? What makes you think it's not a secure site - I'm sure lots of other people on here have ordered from then without any bother?

it is a secure site for orders so don't worry about your details going astray.

To know that the site is secure, you should always look for a yellow padlock at the bottom right of your screen and the address you are ordering from should show a slight change of address - i.e. the http should change into https (the 's' stands for secure). Thanks for your prompt reply. I would hate anyone to run away with my hard-earned piggy bank money

Thanks Paul - but if the site is secure, why doesn't it say so?

My guess would be that not all sites are coded to be fully compliant with standards. Overclockers has been going for years and many people here use them and other sites for orders. Believe me we would not suggest a site if we thought it was in the slightest way dubious and we would jump on any post that was linking to an insecure site for purchases.
The quote in my post was from the front page of overclockers by the way, maybe they have put it there because others have asked the same question of them.
