Re: windows 7 update

First, I would recommend you uninstall itunes, reboot then reinstall itunes (do not use the repair option).

If you need to update Internet Explorer, or Windows Live Mail, I believe you can just use Windows Update.

Re: windows 7 update

Havent had an opportunity to use a touch screen with the preview of Windows 8. But it should be fine since its old tech now.

But may I suggest a different browser other than IE since it is the most useless browser around, there has been a spate of advertising viruses believe it or not, where it plays a snippet of the Snickers advert in the background with no video just the audio, the one with Joan Collins, it exploits IE9 to infect a PC.

But at least its simple to clean.

Just need to get into safe mode (press F8 quickly before booting into Windows) and then look for a file r6shdgrf.exe in c:\programdata\ (a hidden folder under Windows Vista and Windows 7).

Correct. You should have Windows Update set to full automatic anyway. No sensible reason not to in a normal home environment.

Win8 Release Preview is available as a free download at the moment so you can try it and decide for yourself. I'd suggest installing it in a different partition for the moment though. Makes it easy to get rid of if you decide you don't like it.

That's just personal opinion. I've never liked Firefox, find IE9 and Chrome to be pretty equal but don't like Google so primarily use IE9. But that's just my personal opinion.

I can't find any reference to this on a search (using DuckDuckGo, Bing and Google). Can you show a link? I'm interested in this.

Re: windows 7 update

Frist off Andrew, I would stop using IE, and switch to Firefox or Chrome. They are much better browers.

Secondly, try removing then reinstalling iTunes. iTunes is woeful on a PC.

There isn't any official site warnings etc about it, it is only recent, and have sent the file myself to the main AV developers.

But through helping others in my area it has been easily found, it is always the "sounds like Joan Collins speaking" then I know yep... thats the one.

I got it myself via a site which shows rotating ads, just appeared, took a fair whack of Processing which in turn semi-halted the PC then ended up playing a 3 seconds snippet of sound of Joan Collins. I doubt the virus is harmful in terms of security or system stability, just a sneaky way for someone somehow to gain revenue from an ad.

But the one thing that did amaze me was the filename was constant on all PCs I looked at, because it looked like a random generated name so was expecting different filenames but in the same location.

So I deleted the file, checked the registry for a couple of entries pertaining to IE9 and its gone.
