Question New Display

Hi,

Looks like my Samsung 2243BW is starting to go on the blink...quite literally as it now goes intermittently dim / bright.

Anybody want to recommend me a new monitor?

Something between 22" (current) and 27"?

LED or LCD?

Re: New Display

I got an Asus VE278Q in January and I'm pleased as punch with it. I was worried that 27" would be too big, but it's actually fine. I use it for general PC use, gaming and photography / digital work. I know it's not an IPS panel, but a good one of those at 27" was just not justifiable. In games it's absolutely fine. no ghosting at all. colours are rich, bright and vibrant and contrast is nice and deep. warning though - it's WAY too bright out of the box!

as always, it depends on your needs, wallet and how anal you might be in terms of picture / technology acceptance (ie - MUST be IPS of have some stupid contrast ratio that's a lie anyway because the manufacturers only tend to advertise the dynamic range). for me, it's spot on and the price is an excellent one.

Hi,

Thanks for that...I know you have similar interests to me (photography) and yes I was also looking at an IPS panel. But as you say they are very expensive and I don't have the hardware to run one anyway.

I'll checkout the model you mentioned - thanks. An Iiyama ProLite E2773HDS is on the list at the moment.

Re: New Display

IPS panels are not expensive, you can get decent quality 24" ones for under £150.

Any onboard graphics card would be able to run it fine.

Re: New Display

for me, at present, I mainly play games over doing a lot of photography, so although IPS would be nice it wasn't essential. and as I say, for me, I settled on 27" as I wanted to get a bigger monitor than what I already had, meaning the cost of descent IPS would have been quite a bit.

Probably going to go for a 27" - that's when they get expensive!

Re: New Display

Ah, well yes they do get a lot more at 27", though there is this:

http://www.trustedreviews.com/viewso...Monitor_review

Not quite IPS but close, and costs less than my 24" IPS did a couple years ago.

Personally I'm not sure it's worth it going for 27" though, for me I find 2x24" (which costs less) is far better for actually doing productive stuff, and a single 27" only better for gaming/movie watching.

Re: New Display

Agreed. I've had a dual screen setup for many years. Wouldn't be without it. Same at work too.

Re: New Display

Sorry - are you saying I can get two decent 24" displays for the price of a mid-range 27" display? Care to show me some LEDs with 1 /2 ms response??

I love my Acer S221HQL. It has a separate PSU and so is really thin; and under £100!

Re: New Display

I recently got myself one of these: http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Monit...roductId=46360

Very nice indeed. I'm more into gaming on PC than anything else so the low response was a good thing. Monitor is also very bright in default settings. Don't really know what it's like for the colour accuracy though that you might want for photography. Inevitably the on board speakers can't match a proper setup.

I suspect IPS panels, whilst nice for the colour accuracy, can't really do the response times some gamers might hope for. But then I'm also not sure if the really small response is noticeable on the average persons eyesight.

Re: New Display

Cool. Good to get real world reviews rather than the manufacturers descriptions.

For some reason I've always gone for a well-known brand slightly more expensive device on the grounds that the are better built and the others are inferior.

I'd put AOC, BenQ, HannsG into this category and Samsung, Iiyama, Asus it the better brands...think thats me just being brainswashed by brand names though as the panels are probably only made by 2 or 3 manufacturers anyway!!

Do you want IPS or 1-2ms response? The two are mutually exclusive, IPS is high quality, slow response, TN fast response, low quality. You won't get both in the same monitor.

As we've seen the cheapest 27" IPS is about £350 and mid-range ones are £600-1000

Yet there's a very good 23" IPS LED here for £111 or a 24" non-IPS with 2ms response for £159 here.

Re: New Display

Hello,

After doing some research and having some monitors in a basket ready to checkout - and then not completed due to more research, it's come down to giving up on a 27" IPS - don't want to spend that amout on one.

So - 2nd solution is a 24" IPS. I've been looking at the Asus PA246Q but I've read some reviews talking about issues when them.

I particularly like this one as it has full adjustment and picture in picture feature.

Anybody got one of these - or the 23" version?

Re: New Display

Well I think I've made my choice - a Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24" Widescreen LED IPS Monitor

1920 X 1200 1080p
8ms Response
VGA / DVI / HDMI / DisplayPort
4 x USB

~£230 - £250 depending on where I get it from.
