Google Nexus 4 Android phone, and Nexus 7 & 10 Android tablets [UPDATE]

Google has announced its own "Nexus" Android tablet: the Nexus 7.

http://www.google.co.uk/nexus/#/7

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMQdfGFK5XQ

Manufactured by Asus, the Nexus 7 features:

Tegra 3 SoC (quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU, GeForce ULP GPU)

1GB RAM

7” 1280x800 HD IPS display (216 ppi)

WiFi

Bluetooth

8 or 16GB storage

Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)

It is available for pre-order now. The 8GB version costs £159 and the 16GB version costs £199.

Great specs for the price.

Given the size, I see this as more of a competitor for the Kindle Fire than the iPad.

It should also be the final nail in the coffin for RIM's failed BlackBerry PlayBook. Similar price as the PlayBook, but better specs and a far better supported OS.

EDIT:

See here for the updated Nexus range, announced at the end of October 2012 - http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/19...l#post35490261

I was looking at the Transformer Pad, but am seriously considering this now, as I've got a decent laptop so would much prefer something in between that and my SGS II rather than a replacement for the laptop

Fairly nice specs, but the lack of expandable storage (SD or Micro-SD) is a deal-breaker for me.

Crappy internal storage, no external storage, and no 3G. Basically a HTC One X with bigger screen and less storage and no 3G.

And the reason for that is that it's over half the price of the One X

Nexus 7 16GB is £199

HTC One X is £479

Actually I was comparing the 1/4 storage to 1/4 price ($199). However a £100 3G modem and 3x£40 for additional 24GB storage still doesn't justify the price of the One X

Well I have ordered the 8Gb version because I can just stream everything to it, and store a few thing's for when I am away from a wireless signal and my phone doesn't have a decent signal.

That is exactly why I want one too. I'd like it for VOD from BBC and Sky plus live tv from Sky GO and then a couple of games and movies on there for other times. And this is on top of web browsing so should be good for keeping me busy.

I'm slightly more tempted now that Google tech support have confirmed that although it has no SD card slot you can use external USB storage via the micro-USB port. For general day to day use the 16GB model would be fine for me, and for the times I'd want to use it for watching video a flash drive would be fine.

That's no different from any other phone with USB-OTG or, indeed, even iPhones or iPads with external storage adapters, they're quite clunky and impractical IMO:

Wouldn't want that sticking out of my phone or tablet all day.

Its not all day though, just when you need to use it.

Sucks if you use it all day (or want to e.g. stand it up)

re: Google Nexus 4 phone, and Nexus 7 & 10 tablets [Android]

The good thing about tablet's though is that you can convert the video's you want to store on it right down to around 200mb and still keep the same quality.

My dad uses his Ipad and he converts tv episodes down to around 75mb and they still look really good.

With the tablet's, all you need really is to convert 1 or 2 film's and store them on it for when you are away from a wireless connection, and then when you have a wireless connection just open up VLC on it and stream from your media pc if you have one, and run VLC on that and away you go you can stream anything from your pc.

My dad just called and said the money has been taken from his account (ebuyer) - and looking on their site it says delivery for tomorrow.

Fingers crossed
