I've exhausted all avenues Gavin but many thanks for your help. I'm so p**d of with it rebooting I feel like throwing it out of the window. I 've decided to take it in for repair tomorrow, probably cost an arm and a leg, but I didn't realise just how much I had come to rely on it for Skype, banking etc.

Just one last question, I still have the original System (Vista) installation disk, if I downloaded all my important files and apps to a memory stick, and reloaded the disk, does anyone know if this could/would sort the problem?

Re: PC keeps rebooting help!

Its always worth a go however with the fact you have had no BSOD and just had reboots I personally do not think its software ( could still be wrong though) I still think its either a fault psu or motherboard

Thanks for that Tizzy. I'm so glad I didn't get rid of this old PC it has been a God send, even though it takes 10 longer to do anything and now some of the pages are freezing, so on that note...............

Re: PC keeps rebooting help!

Might be worth looking at the temps though in the Bios you might just need to add some more thermal paste clean the old one off or failing that the CPU fan might be on its way out.

Other options take out all removable hardware and put it back in some of it may have come lose/dust.

Other than that as you said get it repaired.

Re: PC keeps rebooting help!

First signs of a system overheating is a massive slowdown as the cpu underclocks itself. This has been present in systems for quite a while now but the old Athlons would literally melt.

A system is unlikely to reboot because of a overheating CPU of course just to make me a fool this will be the odd case out

Re: PC keeps rebooting help!

Why wouldn't a pc reboot or shut down if the CPU gets too hot? my did in the past when the fan wasn't on right.

Re: PC keeps rebooting help!

Because modern CPUs (modern, as anything in the last 8-10 years) are designed to
1) Prevent themselves ever getting too hot to begin with
2) If they do manage to get too hot, self-protection circuity forces an instant poweroff. Never a reboot.

Re: PC keeps rebooting help!

Hands up all of you that thought it was a hardware problem!

It cost £45 just for them to diagnose, their diagnosis is the hardrive has gone, cost for a new hardrive in the region of £110, I take it that's without labour. So we must be talking £155-200 to fix. It's not good news. To crown it all my little old PC is now acting up. Think I'll go back to bed.

Re: PC keeps rebooting help!

How big and what type of Hard Drive do you need? Ebuyer have a couple of 500G SATA drives for around £55. Fitting a new hard drive is a doddle...

Having said that: I'm a little surprised that a failing hard drive would cause the machine to reboot. I would think it's more likely it would fail to boot. Someone more knowledgeable might think otherwise though.

I have no idea Danielf what type of hard drive I would need, this was a quote from the repair shop. I can't help feeling suspicious, they also said they may be able to recover my date that would be an extra £25. I am just going to collect it and bring it home, hopefully they haven't wiped everything. Luckily I downloaded my most precious documents and pictures before I sent it for repair.

I am loathe to put it on the scrap heap but I've got to be practical, and I am looking at this lappy, does anyone think it's a good buy? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2809003609...ht_4813wt_1029

I would pick it up from the shop and not let them do anything, as it sounds like they are either overcharging you, or trying to sell you a part that's needlessly overspecced. You should be able to swap the drive yourself for around £50, and people here will be more than happy to walk you through it.

Alternatively, as you say, you might be better off with a new machine. How old is your pc?

Oh. I wouldn't buy a laptop off ebay...

It's 5 years old in July with one very careful owner (me). I'm really vexed about it being a write off. What's wrong with EBay? PM me. I'm off now to pick up the PC.

Thank you so much Tizme, as you know I always value your help and information. I don't want to go for a refurb machine, I haven't totally given up with this one as yet. Tomorrow I will try and start it up, see what if anything I can salvage, then I shall open the side and have a look at the H/drive to see what make/model I need to get. As long as this old faithful PC keeps going it is my lifeline to this forum. Is there any drawbacks to fitting a new H/drive?

Re: PC keeps rebooting help!

you do not need to match the model or make you just need to match the type . It will be IDE or sata IDE has a lot of pins and a wide ribbon cable and a 4 pin molex for power Sata has a small thin cable to it and a much smaller power cable

If its IDE I most likely have one or 2 lying around otherwise they will be expensive to buy

scrub that small IDE drives are not to bad
