PC build
Hi
so after waiting for ivy bridge
and being busy last month or so
I can now upgrade my PC
this is used for gaming and everyday use
and would like some advice
this is mainly what i want to get
i5 3570K £170
2x4gb Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Jet Black, PC3-12800 £40
128GB OCZ Vertex 4 £105
AMD 7850 £190
have PSU, case, DVD, OS, HDD and other bits and bobs
now i need a mobo
thinking of getting a low price Z77 for around £90
any recommendations?
not gonna overclock or crossfire
and dont need that many USB 3.0 or other connectors
any point of getting higher priced mobo?
and the SSD
the is vertex 4 good? tomshardware recommends the Samsung 830
so which 1 should i go for?

Re: PC build
Vertex 3 are the cheapest price/performance right now.

The Mushkin Chronos might have something to say about that :-)

Re: PC build
Not sure what games you play but I have a system here that, even after around 2 or 3 years, still seems to play everything I throw at it.
AMD Athlon II X4 635
4GB RAM (3 useable as only 32 bit OS)
Geforce 9800GTX 1GB GFX Card.

Re: PC build
Smilie I would go for the SSD and to be fair I'm quite tempted with the Mushkins now as they are just under 80 for 120gb ( http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/...roductId=45660) which shop you thinking off getting this all from?
I'm not sure about the Z77 boards as I dont fancy losing all those ports with useless dvi, vga and hdmi ports that will never get used as you are using a dedicated graphics card already.

D'oh I meant the Agility 3's. They're retailing slightly cheaper (£2) delivered than the 120GB Chronos and £18 cheaper than the 240GB Chronos.
Kingston V+200's come it at £68.98 including delivery for the 120GB, 535MB/s read, 480MB/s write (claimed) version:

Re: PC build
I'm running 2 agility 3's at the moment no real problems...one in the desktop and one that went into a 4 year old laptop and brought a whole new lease of life into it

Re: PC build
I most likely get most if not all from scan.co.uk
as they do alot of todays only deals
and the things im looking for are on them atleast once a week
think i also still have free delivery from them
as i used to frequent a forum which scan give free delivery to thier members
the SSD u guys are suggesting are very good
but think i want to go for 120k IOPS drives
as the chances are i won't upgrade it again anytime soon
the current PC im using is like 5years+ i think (nvidia 7800 time)

Re: PC build
The only real reason to go for a higher end motherboard is your overclocking requirements if any. Most boards turn out in pretty similar quality to so its only really the companies customer support/rma you have to think about.
About the SSD's, you have decided to get one at a good time as we are currently in the middle of an SSD price war, just like the motherboards SSD's are very similar as they are all based on just a handful of controllers so it just depends on where your buying from as to which is the best value as each store has different relationships with the manufacturers.

Bare in mind in real world computing the SSD benefits are noticeable but not in an outstanding way
Windows will install quicker windows will start quicker and programs will load quicker. But remember once they are loaded they are running in ram so while you are doing the majority of time you will notice no difference at all
Also if you install loads of ram you will never page much so will get no benefit with that either ( with new SSDs there is no need to move the page just do not make it a static file ie both upper and lower limits the same)

Re: PC build
Honestly I would say personally upgrading to an SSD has probably been the best upgrade I've ever done. I've found often the bottleneck on a lot of systems actually is disk IO, so if you have money to spare I'd certainly recommend it. Using a 120GB Mushkin Chronos SSD myself.
Personally I wouldn't touch the Corsair Vengeance RAM just because it makes it pretty much impossible to install any large air coolers, and I can't honestly say I believe those massive heat sinks actually make any real difference.
As far as motherboards go I quite like the ASUS boards - had issues before with Gigabyte boards but then again maybe I was just unlucky. I'd imagine any Z77 board would be fine - I can't imagine you'd gain a whole lot going for a more expensive board unless you specifically require the additional functionality they add.
I've found Aria is usually the cheapest for PC components but there's no harm in shopping around if you don't mind paying the extra for delivery.

Indeed, ram does not really get hot, I also read somewhere (cant seem to find it) that ram with heatsinks actually got warmer without some form of active cooling than ram without heatsinks.

Re: PC build
most people only populate 2 ram slots with 4 gig in each. My system uses all 4 and still allows for a massive air cooler
