And how do you know that that removes all the dll's, reg entries and other crap. You don't. The best way is a virgin install.

Unused dlls and reg entries will do nothing. There is no benefit in clearing registry entries as its only a database and it will make no difference.

as it is here but down-burn-install is no different to down-burn-play which people picked up on pretty quick.

I would never run a warez release of any critical software ie OS or AV simply because its been messed with by someone that is not me.

it is true they are tiny files that do nothing

There is no performance gain from registry cleaners this is easily proven and has been proven on CF in the past. A few dlls with no program attached will just take a few meg in space and do nothing to the performance of the machine.

A .dll by its very nature requires an exe file to activate it if the program is removed there is not exe file and the .dll file will not be able to run.

Well anyway, the Asus is up and running and Osem Jnr is delighted with his new machine which seems just as fast as our i3 desktop pc. Thanks for the advice and rest assured we'll be back for more if it all goes pear shaped...

what you have more likely found is a corruption caused by a program that has not been uninstalled correctly rather than the left over files. This can happen on any system thats why a restore point or image should be made before undertaking major clean ups. Ive got a folder with a few mp3s in there they do nothing unless I run the principle is the same a dll or other left over files will do nothing unless it is run by a program.

I stand by my original point and that is a complete reinstall is overkill unless you are experienced and removing crapware from a new computer is simple. Another point with computers being so quick nowadays this crapware only tends to effect start up times and the simple solution to this is run msconfig stop it all running from boot then install your av of choice and your system will be fine. Its not like we are running windows 98 with 32 meg of ram and a 2 gig hdd is it
