Is this possible?
With Vigin I've always been hard wired directly into the modem (the bit that Virgins white Coax goes in)
My Daughter purchased a Lappy yesterday and obviously wants to get it online, my line.
If I re-start using the netgear four port switch and setup a wireless network, would I still be able to continue using an hard wire setup, from the netgear four port switch, while my Daughter is using the wireless setup?
Also am I asking for security problems caused by not currently utilising the netgear 4 port switch?
BTW if the terminology that I'm using is rubbish, I apologise, I'm having a few senior moments today
Thanks for any feedback

Re: Is this possible?
Yes, the netgear will do wired and wireless at the same time quite happily. Just make sure that you set up WPA2 as a minimum security and give it a nice long complicated passkey (the laptop and any other wifi product you want to connect will need the same passkey)

Re: Is this possible?
I'm finding this rather confusing. What sort of modem are you currently using?
Are you sure the Netgear widget is a SWITCH, because if it is then it won't do wireless.
If your Virgin modem is not wireless-enabled then you need a wireless router, which will allow both wired and wireless connections.

Re: Is this possible?
I've presume he means router as he said Wifi.
Answering your other question on security.. In simple terms attaching your PC directly to a modem allows anyone to connect directly to your PC though whether or not they get anything depends on firewall, security..etc.. A router will add an extra layer of security in the form of a NAT where the rotuer acts like a buffer between yourself and the internet and is more secure..

Re: Is this possible?
I think Kymmy must have had dealings with folks my age before
What I call the Netgear 4 port switch, has got a wireless a erial whats the proper name of them?
Is the first one the modem & the Netgear one (4 port switch) is the proper name for that a wireless router?
I also need to figure out what ipads, ipods, iphones & wee things are.
I have got a mobile fone though, & can build computers
Providing I've done it right the attached pics are what I've got available

Re: Is this possible?
Stupid really as VM themselves used to supply the same netgear router (it looks like a 614 though the 108Mbp 624 looks the same).
If you want to check out the basics of security and what others can see from the internet then try SHIELDS UP @ www.grc.com and do a common port scan

Well, that's OK for a 1-pc basic setup but not the safest option.
What you need to do is connect the yellow network cable from the modem to the the Netgear thingy (which is called a wireless router by the way) Connect the other end of the network cable into the WAN port on the router (the one on it's own next to the row of 4 switch ports).
Your pc connects with a 2nd network cable into any one of the 4 ports. Now do a staged power-up, modem first then once the lights have settled down power to router and finally pc. You should now have an internet connection.
ps - check out my age..

Hehe, no thanks. Been there, done that and learned some expensive lessons.
Glad you got sorted anyway.
