Using 3g as wireless network
MODs Why don’t we have and Apple section ie Ipad/Ipod/iphone etc, makes sense?
Without jailbreaking my phone can I use the 3G network to work on my ipad as wifi? How?
TIA

Re: Using 3g as wireless network
We don't need an iOS section, there's not sufficient discussion on that one topic to justify it (we don't even have a Windows section ).
You can tether your iPhone and your iPad, with certain caveats. More here:

Why not Jailbreak, it's pretty straightforward these days?

Warranty part scares me. However it seems I'm one of the few who does not jailbreak.
Any reliable links on youtube to do it?

Re: Using 3g as wireless network
Am I reading that right? You need to pay to enable the wifi hotspot on an iPhone?

Re: Using 3g as wireless network
That's down to the carrier rather than the phone AFAIK, although I guess a non-jailbroken iOS is what allows the carrier to do that.

Hmm, some further reading suggests it's no different on Android. I just happen to be on O2 who allow it. It's still shocking that providers have the option to charge you for it though.

Re: Using 3g as wireless network
BBC did a piece on this a few months back IIRC. It's a bit of a scandal that they can effectively charge you twice for the same bandwidth, just because of the way you decide to use it.

Re: Using 3g as wireless network
Providers can charge you for additional services just about any way they want. Now if you're paying for the same data twice, it's another matter, but if you're only paying for internet access on your handset and want to use more, an additional charge is perfectly reasonable.
Most UK networks don't charge you twice for the same bandwidth.

Re: Using 3g as wireless network
Bad time to point out Android has tethering built-in and you don't need to jailbreak it then...

Re: Using 3g as wireless network
I have an iPhone 4s on 3 . For tethering I just go to settings>general>network>turn on personal hotspot. Then create a password the iPhone then.becomes a mobile wifi hotspot. Then just start up your device search for wireless connections and connect to iPhone put in password and you're away.
Obviously your speed will depend on your 3G network speed but I find it invaluable at times .I can often hit 7mb with 1mb upload which is plenty. No jail breaking needed, seriously the amount of people who on the Internet jailbreak there iPhones to get things IT CAN ALREADY DO is crazy.

Re: Using 3g as wireless network
On a side note, it seems virgin mobile cap the 3G speed to 2mb

If you read the thread, you'll see that that's not what it is about. Some providers don't allow tethering (so they can charge you twice), and jail-breaking may solve that.

You're quite right the OP asked can he use the 3G network and his iPhone to create a wifi hotspot. My reply was definitely off topic when I offered advice on how to use a iPhone as a wifi hotspot via a 3G network.
