Computer won't sleep.

Computer won't go into sleep mode when set to. I've been into the advanced power settings and set all them the way they should be but it still won't go to sleep. It's Windows 7, do any of you guys know of any other settings?

Re: Computer won't sleep.

When you say it won't sleep, what happens when you tell it to sleep?? Does it go to sleep and wake up, do nothing or give an error???

It doesn't go to sleep full stop, I can put it to sleep via the start menu but it won't go to sleep after 20 minutes of being idle.

Re: Computer won't sleep.

Have you got all the drivers for the system properly installed especially the acpi drivers for the motherboard?

Yes everything is installed, it was working OK up until Wednesday then all of a sudden it wouldn't go to sleep unless I put it to sleep via the start button.

Re: Computer won't sleep.

Have you tried rocking it to sleep?

---------- Post added at 11:07 ---------- Previous post was at 10:57 ----------

have you tried this?...

After "playing" for a good while, I determined that shutting down the print spooler service allowed the system to go to sleep.

from internet..

---------- Post added at 11:08 ---------- Previous post was at 11:07 ----------

and this..

I had the same problem with srvnet on my workstation. What I finally figured out is that on my server, I had it set to check a shared folder on my workstation ever few minutes. Basically a watched folder share was causing it to not sleep. It sleeps like a baby now. I discovered/remembed it by pure luck. I was checking the Sessions folder under Computer Management and happen to see the Guest user jump on for a split second and right back off.

---------- Post added at 11:09 ---------- Previous post was at 11:08 ----------

and this...

I just want to propose my solution. I have windows 7 32 bit home premium, and it turns out under advanced power options, sharing media, if you set it go to "Away mode" this prevents your computer from entering real sleep. So just change it and your fine.

Re: Computer won't sleep.

I have the opposite problem on my win7 64bit system. It'll go to sleep but then won't wake up so I have to hard reboot it.
Turned off sleep atm till I can be bothered to find a fix......

Re: Computer won't sleep.

Have you checked the "Wake on LAN" setting in the BIOS. If you have any activity on your network and this is set, then it maybe the issue.

Are you saying it needs to be 'off'?

Re: Computer won't sleep.

Yes, otherwise traffic on your connection will keep your computer awake.

EDIT: Ignore me, I was under the impression that any network activity would cause the computer to awake from sleep mode when Wake on LAN was set but I've just double checked and this is not the case. You need a "magic packet"

Have you added any new hardware such as a graphics tablet?

Re: Computer won't sleep.

Use the windows power tool to find out what program is causing your computer to stay awake and close it.
