Monitor support by graphics card

My home pc is a Medion desktop from about 3? years ago with a Core2quad Q6600 2.4GHz, with 3GB RAM and a GeForce 9500S graphics card with 512MB, which is plugged into a iiyama AU5131T LCD monitor with a resolution of 1600x1200.

I was thinking of treating myself to a widescreen monitor instead, and I see that the 24" monitors tend to run resolutions of 1920x1080 or 1200, but when I look at the settings available on my pc for resolution, these higher widescreen numbers are not there.

My question is whether the graphics card is capable of supplying the required resolution to a high-res widescreen monitor? Would the higher numbers just appear if I plug in the new monitor? Or do I need a new graphics card, too?

Thanks

Derek

Re: Monitor support by graphics card

Only numbers that your current monitor are capable of are shown.

Re: Monitor support by graphics card

There is sometime though a tick box for "SHOW ALL RESOLUTIONS" but qassie is correct in that the card will only show the resolutions relevant to the plug and play monitor attached to it
