Thumbs down Apple report record profits

So can anyone argue Apple products aren't overpriced?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-16712089

Quote:
Apple reported record-breaking net profits for the three months to 31 December 2011 of $13.06bn (£8.36bn), up 118% from the same period in 2010.
I just can't believe people will pay inflated prices for a device which is available elsewhere with the same, if not better, functionality.

I guess they just want to be seen as 'cool'...

Re: Apple report record profits

I won't have a Iphone because I never get a good enough signal when I had one, meaning I had to drive around a mile or so away from my house just to be able to make a call, but someone else in the same house on the same network could make call's with no problem's and Apple and the network said the phone was fine.

As for the rest of there stuff I would rather have something that offers more for a cheaper price.

Re: Apple report record profits

and in apple related news, dutch court rejects apple design infringement ban against

about time to, and german court is due to rule as well and can see that going against them - what with the photoshop'd pics that they used to try and demonstrate likeness of the pad and tab.

Very, Very easily. 37 million people purchased an iPhone in just one quarter, 15 million iPads and 5 million Macs. That is incredible. Clearly customers do not think they are overpriced.

You forget that functionality is not the only measurement of quality. User experience and design are also important and these are areas that Apple excels at whilst providing the functionality that most people require, only in a way that makes it seamless.

This has been the refrain from Apple's critics for a long time. It's wearing thin because year after year Apple seem to do better and better. Until people recognise what their strengths are rather than simply patronising the consumers then their rivals will continue to fall behind.

Can you link to those stats? I'm not trying to deny them or anything I just want to see how well competitors did over the same quarter.

It's only the Apple figures however.

Quote:
Cook said he was thrilled the company sold a record 37.04m iPhones in the final quarter of 2011, a 128% rise on a year ago. "We could have sold more if we'd had more supply," he said. The recently launched iPhone 4S proved to be the company's best seller in the quarter. "We could not be happier," said Cook.

In record sales across nearly all product categories, Apple sold a record 15.43m iPads over the quarter, more than double a year ago. It sold 5.2m Macs during the quarter, a 26% unit increase.

Only sales of iPods fell, down 21% year on year to 15.4m; however, Apple has enjoyed higher average selling prices as consumers buy more of the iPod Touch.

Not if your argument is so patronising and dismissive no, but you won't win over anyone like that.

No need to be patronising. Some of us like Apple products because we like having something that just works. Having said that, I sit on both sides of the fence as I have a fairly powerful PC as well.

But, the fact is that PC manufacturers are going to the wall because the prices are too low for them to make a profit. The mainstream PC market is not in a healthy state.

Re: Apple report record profits

But if others can make similar products for lower prices it's a bit much for Apple to start court proceedings against those rivals for copyright infringement..it's not as if they are out of pocket in any way looking at their profits.

Frankly even if they had the only product on the market I'm still not spending £500 + for a notebook however swanky it is.

Re: Apple report record profits

It's patent infringement, and Apple aren't the only ones doing it. It's (sadly) standard practice between tech companies at the moment. That said, if Apple, or any other company, invests millions in novel technology, the patent system is supposed to be there to allow them to make a fair return on that investment. They shouldn't be castigated for using it.

.
How many of those sales where giveaways though ,yes they are still sales but would the people who own iphones/pads because they signed to a particular network or used a specific firm of lawyers for their injury claim have actually bought one

I would say the vast majority. Apple don't tend to give away iPhones or iPads.

Again I don't think iPads from Injury lawers accounts for a large amount of the 15 million iPads that have been sold. Contracts maybe but these would be purchased from Apple and are used to entice people into a contract. The networks aren't in the business of giving around £400 devices as a freebe.
