As for taking a cut elsewhere...
Apple takes 30% of the price of all apps sold on the App Store, with the remaining 70% going to the developer.
... which is the same split for app sales on the Windows Phone Marketplace: 30% for MS, 70% for the developer.
... which is same split for app sales on the Android Market: 30% for the carriers and payment processors, 70% for the developer.

There's a huge difference between taking a 30% slice of the sale of an app and demanding a 30% slice of all future subscription fees purchased through an app from the store (and demanding such purchases be made available through the store at the risk of being booted out of the store). It may have been 'quietly dropped', but the problem is there in what the company thinks it can get away with.

Re: Apple report record profits
But Apple dropped it... dropped it before it came into place... and this was *after* all the criticism of the plan. Surely it is a good thing that Apple took the criticism on board, and realised it was not a good idea?
Would it not have been worse if Apple had ignored the criticism and gone ahead with it anyway?

I don't think it's such a big stretch. The problem with any discussion like this is that inevitably it's framed by those who are more interested in tech and therefore more interested in pushing it, experimenting with it, hacking it, etc. Apple's products, by and large, are not designed with that audience in mind. They produce high-end consumer electronics that anyone can take out of the box, switch on and get going with.
My mother-in-law is about as technophobic as they come but she has an armful of I-devices and she's never managed to break any of them. She's a classic example of the target market and she wouldn't have a clue what 'jailbreak' means, much less wish to perform one.

My mum is 85, she has an ipad2, iphone 4s and a Macbook.
I have to talk to her via imessage even if she's in the same room.

This is ultimately Steve Job's legacy, they maken much more money than they did before the return of Steve Jobs, if we had more companies like Apple, the world would be a better place!

I'm looking forward to VM giving out free iphone and ipads so their customers can use TiVo buddy.
Its a good gesture of them and the least they can do now they're screwing up remote TiVo access for the majority of non-apple customers.
The cynic in me thinks there might be some deal between Virgin and Apple. There certainly is between Sky and Apple.

You do realise Apple is non-unionised, both in its offices and shops?

Yes. Done a similar thing to what VM are doing. Made their Sky Go app only available to Apple customers. Promises of an Android equivalent have never been fulfilled, just like VM's promise of an Android TiVo app will never happen. What's even more pitiful is that VM are making sure that any 3rd party Android apps don't work either. It's a closed shop that's very profitable for Apple/Sky/VM.

Re: Apple report record profits
Ironically chucklesome and, I would say, more than a little boot-on-the-other-foot-ish, given that throughout the 90s and early noughties Apple Mac users had to endure years of being shut out of stuff because of the way Microsoft foisted its OS on the world with a series of clever deals and canny marketing. (significant parts of the internet didn't work properly for Mac users for quite some time during the worst of the Internet Explorer years).

Re: Apple report record profits
Apple users are just weird though. There's something deeply suspect about them.

That doesn't imply that Apple have done a deal with them. The Sky Go app is currently only available to iOS users but they have targeted their other applications at different platforms: http://www.sky.com/mysky/makethemost/sky-apps/
Also, from the page above:

We're working hard to create our Sky Go app for Android phones. As soon as we do, you'll be able to download it for free from Android Market.

What if people are both Apple and non-Apple users?
Binary statements are not usually helpful....

An irony that is not lost on you but seems to be on Apple management who don't see the two facedness of doing exactly what they sued Microsoft for so many years ago (Assuming they are actually responsible for it).
And you can't blame android for that, it wasn't even a twinkle in googles eye back then
