Re: SAT NAV help
I think you posted in the Android phone thread
Are you using a private or rental car in the US? If it's a rental, can't you simply rent a Sat Nav with it?

Re: SAT NAV help
Most places will indeed rent one to you as an extra for a few dollars more per week.
Should you want to buy one Garmin 1370 has USA and Canada maps but it's not exactly at the budget end. Tom tom give you nothing unless you pay extra.

Re: SAT NAV help
Don't know if they do USA maps or not but it is free and works on all Android devices (apprently). http://www.telmapbeta.com/
Edit:- Had a quick look around and it looks like it will support USA maps as they are looking for beta testers in the USA.

Whatever you do don't get the one I got. It's the 'Bonnie Tyler' model. It kept telling me to turn around and every now and then it falls apart!

Wow that is old fashioned, try using an A/Z while driving!
And how can they possibly be crap, i suspect it is the user that is hopeless.

Re: SAT NAV help
Being an oldy, tec things take a while to get the hang of .So I thought if I had my own I can master it . Not sit in the Rental yard for half an hour trying to set it up ! Last trip cost me $10 to get the cleaner to do it ( Boy was that fun my Spanish running to getting a beer !!!)

Don't they rely on downloading the maps over the air though, the data charges would be horrendous

Nope. You connect the phone to your PC and download the maps and sound files you want via Nokia Suite.

Re: SAT NAV help
I had a GPS which I updated maps for about six years ago which cost about £100 - the roads change so often it was out of date as soon as it was updated. The number of times it tried to tell me to make my way to the nearest road when the road had changed!
I see they're not even bothering to offer updates now to that model. At least TomTom do guarantee future updates, but I agree, you're going to have to pay for the maps and generally speaking it wont be cheap.
I was loaned one by the hotel I stay at in Canada - but then it's a very special hotel!

Don`t mine googling for this unless anyone can offer model number?
Really only want to get from airport to hotel. Its not so much finding it as what lane do I go in ( after a 10 hour flight , waiting at customs , getting car all normally in the middle night ) I find I need all my wits about me just driving never mind which lane I need to be in to turn off. After a couple of days I`m fine. Never seem to go to the same city twice. However there is a road junction in Cardiff that no one seems to ever get right, judging by the number of cars switching lanes every time I use it!
