No power from Laptop

Wonder if someone can advise me please as l turned on the Laptop and there was no power and only when l put the charged battery in the laptop that it worked so l think it is the power adaptor that is not working but can someone confirm that this is the likely problem as l changed the fuse on the plug of the adaptor and still nothing came on until l put the battery in and then the Laptop came on.

Re: No power from Laptop

If you have a meter then you can test the psu, or a bulb (or two/three in series) to test for a voltage..

Other than that it could be the power connection on the main board (known to go on most laptops as you have a cable swinging it backwards/forwards..)

Re: No power from Laptop

I've had power adaptors fail. It can be as simple as a loose wire, or something else. and that excludes the connection in the laptop itself. A lot of adaptors have a LED indicator. If that isn't lit you know it's the adaptor that's died.

Thanks Kymmy for your reply and the first thing is l have not got a meter to check for the voltage and as l am no expert on these matters but it does seem linked to the plug and power adapter as l have a battery which fits into the back of the laptop and that restores power to the laptop but the trouble is that is now going flat and now each time l try to turn it on from mains power nothing happens so would it be wise to buy a new power adaptor or should l get it taken in and seen to.

Re: No power from Laptop

On my laptop when I plug in the power cord, a little icon appears telling me it's working on mains.

Does this happen with yours denphone

First thing's first though, you need to confirm there is power going to the socket your plugging the adapter into, silly question I know but you never know

The adaptor goes into a port on the laptop and this use to show a white light but that is not showing at all now.

Re: No power from Laptop

Without an ability to test out the PSU all you can do is try another.. Dare I suggest you order one online or through argos if they sell them.. When it comes if it powers the laptop then you've solved the problem, if it doesn't work then send back under 7 day selling rules (or argos 16 day money back guarantee).

Without a meter, identical laptop or other way of confirming the PSU is working then that is your only option.

You could though also try your local computer shop and ask them to test out the PSU, most will do it quickly for free..

Silly question, have you checked the fuse in the plug?

Yes, switch modes still have rectified power through the primary into a small ballast and its the sensing on the ballast that controls the switching.. otherwise they tended to go bang with no current loading as there would be nothing to sense
