*Bump*

Going back to this subject - is it worth waiting for drives with the Indilinx controller?

The OCZ 120GB Agility 3 SSD - AGT3-25SAT3-120G is now £121 and getting more tempting every week!!

BTW - think I forgot to say that I also have a traditional 1TB HDD that'll store the data.

Re: Which SSD?

I am getting another Corsair Force 3 at some point and putting them both in raid, but it's up to you if you want to buy now or wait.

To be honest I have not looked at any spec's for ssd's that will be coming soon so not sure what the speed differences will be.

Just go for that Agility 3, you wont regret it and OCZ's rma/warranty is great.

Re: Which SSD?

I have the 64 gig agility 3 drive BSOD'd on me about 3/4 times in 6 months other than that never had a problem and I put the error down to a program fault because since I formatted December I've not had a BSOD since.

Boot time to internet access is around 10 seconds

I've got the 240GB version of that. I've yet to find any faults with it. Class-leading performance for the price, and pretty stable (so far).

I suggest you download the 2.15 firmware update that purpotedly fixes the BSODs. It was released 2-3 months ago.

Re: Which SSD?

Another *bump*

Been looking into the M4 that RizzyKing mentioned....had an online chat with Novatech and the guy instantly recommened the M4 as well!

It appears that stock of these are low - I see Crucial are about to launch a new line of drive(s) the Adrenaline ...looks like it only has one capacity - 50GB - wtf??!!

The adrenaline is designed to be a cache drive for use in the likes of Intel's smart response this is where the SSD is used as a big cache for a hard drive atm I believe its only natively available on the socket 1155 z68 chipset and it may be on the socket 2011 x79 chipset, That drive comes with software to do it though. Have to say I would not really be interested in using an SSD as a cache imo a SSD running Windows and app will be the faster solution overall but it does take a bit more knowledge and upkeep rather than the plug n play style of the caching.

As for choice here is a test the guardian ran on 4 different SSD's and here is a test OverclockersUK conducted between a wider range of drivers.

Again really you will not notice any real world difference between all of these drives for me it just comes down to price, warranty and what manufacturer I prefer.

Re: Which SSD?

I've got a 64GB Mushkin Callisto Deluxe and a 240GB OCZ Vertex 2E which have served me well, unfortunately friends who have since bought the Vertex 3s and such haven't had as much good luck awaiting firmware updates.

If I were to make the purchase now and not a year ago, I would definitely go with the Crucial M4s.

Re: Which SSD?

A problem was recently found with the M4's where once they reached 5200 hours power on time they would freeze and so on and many of us thought "oh here we go again get ready for the excuses". Crucial admitted the problem straight away and promised they would get a fix out for it and they did the fix is out and as far as i have seen no reported problems. Was nice to see a speedy admission and fixing of the problem unlike some other maker's who shall remain nameless who blamed faults on people's pc's in some cases for quite a while before coming clean and admitting there was a fault in thier product. Has reinforced my view that crucial are the one's to go with .

Re: Which SSD?

Thanks again for the advice. Looks like the M4 it is then!

BTW - a question about firmware...

Say there have been four firmware updates for SSD product - A, B C and D.

If your drive is on firmware A - can you go direct and flash firmware D to it, or are you best following the cycle of A to B, B to C and then C to D?

I know some products you can go direct from A to D as D will contain the code from A, B and C as well as the D updates....others are bit picky and want the full cycle...

Re: Which SSD?

With the M4's just download the latest and flash and your good to go . Can be done in achi so you don't need to alter bios although raid setups cannot be done as a raid.

You should really follow the manufacturers instructions that come with the firmware, rather than hear-say on a unrelated general-interest public forum.

At least if it breaks while following their instructions, you'll have recourse.

Re: Which SSD?

Afternoon,

OK -finally got an SSD - the Crucial M4 128GB.

I'm getting these results - do they look about right of are there more tweaks I can do?

The drive is connected to an Asus P6X58D Premium Board - on one of the Marvell SATA III / 6GBs ports. AHCI Mode on the Marvel controller. I've done a basic W7 64bit build with service pack 1 and updates. I've also installed the Marvell 91XX_V1201002_VistaWin7_WHQL driver from the Asus site.

Anything else??

Re: Which SSD?

About right for that SSD. It's not a particularly fast SSD so you won't get a lot more speed out of it.
