spinstall.exe is not valid Win32 application

Hi All
My old vers of xp was fully up to date with sp3 and worked well but because of one or two problems decided to reformat the hd and reinstall xp.
This all went well and xp was reinstalled but being an old vers needed to be updated.
Because I had an old vers of xp this wouldn't happen automatically, so decided to down load SP1a on my other computer and simply write it to cd and then reinstall in my newly formatted pc.
As you can imagine it didn't work and was confronted by the words in the title of this posting.
Baring in mind that the disc has been reformatted and the installation was on a certified disk and the computer has not logged on to the www I find it difficult to imagine that my pc is infected by a virus.
Does anyone know the answer to my dilema?

Regards
