Connecting vga to antique CRT tv.
Hi I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question. But I have a laptop with only vga output which I want to connect to a very old CRT tv with only 1 scart connection and nothing else. The tv is connected to a dvd player and will by xmas be connected to a V+ box. The dvd player has s-video connection will a vga to s-video cable work? I assume it won't carry sound what cable do I need for that?
Thanks
Mark

Re: Connecting vga to antique CRT tv.
Just remember that a CRT TV is only designed to show about 625 lines so if you want to show vid then great but not really suitable for windows

Re: Connecting vga to antique CRT tv.
that box doesn't support audio. I was thinking of this http://www.amazon.co.uk/VGA-to-S-Vid.../dp/B000P3UB24 and this http://www.amazon.co.uk/3-5mm-Phono-...im_computers_2 would they work connected to the dvd player? The picture quality isn't massively important as long as its watchable because the tv isn't my main tv and will only be used occasionally.

I've just realised the s-video connection on the dvd player is an output connection so pressumably no use.

Well no it wouldn't as VGA is only video
You would have to run a seperate connection for audio

Yes. The VGA signal being output is not compatible with your TV. The cables you have bought assume that the laptop will output the signal in the correct format, and at the correct frequency for the TV to handle. Unless they offer a TV output, most laptops don't. I would recommend that you look at TheNorm's solution. If you don't, and carry on using the cables, you risk serious damage to your TV.
The audio cable you posted should be fine, as long as your TV has phono inputs.

Re: Connecting vga to antique CRT tv.
If you've any hope of that cable working you need to set the resolution as low as it'll go and a standard 60hz/50hz if poss to match PAL refresh rate

Re: Connecting vga to antique CRT tv.
TV will expect a line rate of 15.625kHz, frame rate of 50Hz and a 625i standard though as Graham M says they will often stretch to running at 60 frames (525i) though the height will as likely be reduced. Trying to "pull" the rates too far away from these could result in serious damage.

Re: Connecting vga to antique CRT tv.
You have to also remember that 625 is the maximum yet most TV CRTs would only show about 600 lines with the rest being taken up by teletext signals..
