Re: PC Memory.

Can you motherboard support 4GB?

Try taking out the RAM and then put it back in. (It may not have seated correctly)

years ago I had to go into BIOS then exit and save to enable the system to find the new RAM.

Re: PC Memory.

if the bios says you have 4GB of ram it could be part of two things:

you have a 32bit operating system that will only address up to 3. something

You have hardware that is reserving some of the ram for itself

Re: PC Memory.

you're XP is likely 32 bit. 32 bit OSs can only assign 4Gb or memory in total. this includes things like Graphics cards and audio devices. this is why XP 32 bit, or indeed any 32 bit OS (or 'x86' as it is known) will only see around 3Gb to 3.5Gb of RAM. you will need to install a 64 bit OS to see the full amount of RAM being available to use.

Re: PC Memory.

Ah that explains it cos I am on 32 bit I also have a graphics card with 256mb ddr2.

But what confused me was I used to have 1 x 1gb and 1 x 2gb that used to show up as 3gb ! now I have 4gb I thought it would show up as 4gb.
Thanks.

Now here's another one if you can sort it for me:

My son has just bought a MOTHERBOARD BUNDLE | 8GB 1333MHz | ATHLON 645 QUAD CORE ( gigabyte M68MT-S2) + cpu + fan & 8gb ram,
He has the 64 bit os, his shows 3.96 of ram !!!! but he has a 1gb graphics card installed.

Re: PC Memory.

The graphics card memory will have nothing to do with the RAM amount.
It is only on motherboards with onboard graphics where RAM is taken from your sticks and used by graphics.

Check there is no limit set on the memory available....
Go to Start , then run, msconfig, Boot , Advanced Options.
Make sure Maximum memory is not ticked.

Re: PC Memory.

Depends on the Ram as well I once bought some cheap ram can't remember the make it was 1 gig of DDR it only showed up as 512mb tried it on 2 motherboards.

Not saying this is your case but sometimes motherboards dont like certain sticks of ram or the ram might be faulty

Re: PC Memory.

If you son is running 64bit, the only realistic limits to his upper memory limit will be cost or whatever the motherboards limit is in terms of RAM. now I doubt very much the motherboard can only use 4 Gb, so things to check will be;

Does the POST or BIOS see 8Gb on boot?
Can the DIMM slots support fully the memory in them?

If POST does not see the full 8Gb then you either have a BIOS config issue, faulty DIMM slot or bad memory. In which case, you will need to either go through the BIOS and check the config or take out all the memory and check the sticks one by one in each DIMM slot to assess if it the memory stick or the actual slot that is faulty.

As I say 32 bit windows can only address 4Gb memory in total, including all other components that have memory on them. 64bit can theoretically assign much more, but you will most likely be limited by the motherboards capabilities before you hit that limit.

Re: PC Memory.

Hi Guys 1st thing....He's on 32 bit !!!!!!!!! checked it last night, ( I feel a fool )
I honestly thought he was on 64 bit, cos he's got a gaming machine, so that's why it only shows 3.odd megs of ram...but when he 1st got it, it did say 4 gigs of ram but we had to do a format & re-install windows xp, thats what confused me

Thanks for your kind help though guys.

Mike.
