If you do one thing this weekend......Backup
This week at work we had someone lose all their personal files, photos, music, etc when their laptop was stolen.
Whether your PC or laptop gets stolen, infected with a virus, explodes into pieces, there is one thing we should always remember......Backup.
Buy a removable USB hard drive and hook it up regularly.
Transfer your important data every few weeks or once a month and then lock the drive away somewhere.
Our lives are mostly on computers and as much as people say they will backup another day, that day may be too late.
Do it.

With one of them being off-site in case the house/office burns down.

Re: If you do one thing this weekend......Backup
My dad always takes one of my backups home with him in case my flat catches fire.
Better safe than sorry.

Absolutely. Onto a portable drive which is then kept in a fire proof data safe at work. It would pointless to keep a backup next to the original!

Have you seen how much they cost these days
Actually in all seriousness, backups in some form or other are essential.
From simply user error pressing the wrong button, to a more serious hardware failure is all too easy to reap it's havoc on your cherished memories.

Re: If you do one thing this weekend......Backup
cloud storage is completely impractical for anything other than small amounts of files, the way to go would be a removable portable hard disk coupled with something like this: Allway Sync from http://allwaysync.com/ and you literally only have to remember to take the drive away with you once you've set up which folders to back up/other rules

EaseUS Todo backup gets good write ups
http://download.cnet.com/Easeus-Todo...-10964460.html
At the moment they're doing the paid for version bundled with a partition manager & undelete tool for ~ £60...

Re: If you do one thing this weekend......Backup
As much as I'm sure these cloud sollutions are safe, I do not want important personal data at the hands of someone who may hack in one day.
Off site backup stored somewhere safe works for me.

Depends on your upload speed.
At home, I would agree with you; at work, I get around 80Mb/s, which makes backing up to SkyDrive a doddle..

backup to one folder, truecrypt it, then upload. even if someone hacks a cloud service, they certainly won't get into the file!!!
