Hard Drive prices go through the roof
Surprised this hasn't had much attention and probably why I didn't notice till I was about to buy a new drive. Due the floods in Thailand apparently.

Re: Hard Drive prices go through the roof
So its not just me. I was looking at getting another 1tb from ebuyer and couldnt believe the prices compared to when I bought my last HHD almsot a year ago. In saying that the price of RAM has gone down. I paid just over £65 from 4 gigs(2 X 2GIG) of RAM that exact RAM is now just over £20. I wonder if SSD has also driven up the price of HHD.

Yep. A couple of the major drive factories were under 6 feet of water at one point. Lord knows how long it will take to get the 'clean room' environment functional again. In the meantime the major system builders are talking about running out of drives before Christmas.

Re: Hard Drive prices go through the roof
Scan will only let you buy one HD per order now. Basically there are no Western Digital drives being made in Thailand for the forseeable future

In the quarter ending July 1, 2011, WD shipped approximately 54 million hard drives from its facilities in Thailand and Malaysia, with approximately 60 percent coming from its Thailand sites. The company's Thailand operations source much of its supply of components from local suppliers.

That will be some big hole in capacity.

Re: Hard Drive prices go through the roof
Yeah I was on Ebuyer the other day noticed that it was like over £100 for a 500gig drive.
Might be a good time to sell some spare HD's on ebay you'll get a good price for them at the moment lol

Re: Hard Drive prices go through the roof
And there is me thinking I was going mad.
I suggested a friend bought a portable hard drive because they were cheap. But when I looked on line the price had rocketed.

Re: Hard Drive prices go through the roof
Strangely the externals are slightly cheaper which has not always been the case.

Re: Hard Drive prices go through the roof
Perhaps this might persuade companies that out sourcing abroad is not always the answer. It should also remind them that putting all your eggs in one basket is one proverb to take to heart.

Re: Hard Drive prices go through the roof
Doesn't matter how baskets you use, any loss is going to have an impact. If they didn't outsource, then the cost would be a lot more, not just now, but all the time.

Being on a hill is no guarantee of safety. A Foxconn factory in Juárez, Mexico (elevation 1137m) stopped production due to a lack of water (no sprinkler system).
