It's allowed. Just might not work, depending on what you want to watch. If you want to watch the odd MKV or AVI, it should be OK. If you want to watch anything that might have any Digital Rights Management (such as Blu Rays, DVDs or any legally downloaded movie or TV show), then it won't.
It's going to be expensive though. I think you'd need to use either a converter (they do exist) or a Blu Ray recorder to the conversion. You'd be talking £200 or £300 easily.
