new computer connecting to my wireless router

Hello all, at the moment I have an Acer travelmate 2410 (xp) with wireless card which has given me no bother at all for the last 4 years. However I feel now is the time to move up to a windows 7 model as they seem as cheap as chips these days.

I have a virgin wireless access point Netgear wg602 v3 and a scientific atlanta 2100 modem. Again have had no problems with them the past 4 years, the netgear only allows one computer to be connected, which is fine as I only have one computer!

When I buy the new computer what is the procedure for connecting my new laptop to get it up and running and connected wirelessly to my modem/router? I am hoping it goes like this...

Remove the old laptop switch off my modem and router at the mains, set up and configure my new laptop switch on the modem and router. it should "find" my new laptop and away I go!.

As you will have guessed I know nothing about computers so need a helping hand from you guys.

Cheers
John

Re: new computer connecting to my wireless router

Once the new laptop is ready to use it should see the wireless router. Depending on the wireless software installed on the laptop you may have to scan for available networks or it may say 'wireless networks are within range' or words to that effect.

Choose your wireless router, input the password and you should be up and running. No need to power cycle the modem/router at all.

The OP isn't using a router but rather an access point linked to the modem so a power cycle may be needed. No big deal though, just switch off both and go and make a drink, come back and power back up.
