new computer connecting to my wireless router

Hello all, at the moment I have an Acer travelmate 2410 (xp) with wireless card which has given me no bother at all for the last 4 years. However I feel now is the time to move up to a windows 7 model as they seem as cheap as chips these days.

I have a virgin wireless access point Netgear wg602 v3 and a scientific atlanta 2100 modem. Again have had no problems with them the past 4 years, the netgear only allows one computer to be connected, which is fine as I only have one computer!

When I buy the new computer what is the procedure for connecting my new laptop to get it up and running and connected wirelessly to my modem/router? I am hoping it goes like this...

Remove the old laptop switch off my modem and router at the mains, set up and configure my new laptop switch on the modem and router. it should "find" my new laptop and away I go!.

As you will have guessed I know nothing about computers so need a helping hand from you guys.

Cheers
John

Re: new computer connecting to my wireless router

Once the new laptop is ready to use it should see the wireless router. Depending on the wireless software installed on the laptop you may have to scan for available networks or it may say 'wireless networks are within range' or words to that effect.

Choose your wireless router, input the password and you should be up and running. No need to power cycle the modem/router at all.

The OP isn't using a router but rather an access point linked to the modem so a power cycle may be needed. No big deal though, just switch off both and go and make a drink, come back and power back up.

Re: new computer connecting to my wireless router

If it sees the network and asks you for something it should be the password or network key not the SSID.

Re: new computer connecting to my wireless router

If it asks for an SSID, you've either hidden your network, are trying to connect to the wrong one, or your wireless client is broken. If your router doesn't come with a key then you set it yourself.

Re: new computer connecting to my wireless router

hi,after speaking twice to the asian outpost of virgin media hardly understanding them(not their fault) and spending about 1 and a 1/2 hours explaining my predicament with no success i succumed to the superhub solution .got it this afternoon. painless set up and seems to be working fine . i can connect my android phone's wi connection to my hub also no problem but this damn acer xp laptop cannot. the signal is a strong 5 bars but it keeps scanning and does not actually connect. is there anything i need to do or do i just have to relegate it to landfill. i was only keeping it in case my new one ever had to get repaired .another question if im on my laptop in the bedroom connecting wirelessly to the shub can i connect the above old laptop to the shub in the livingroom with an ethernet cable for my wife to use at the same time .cheers john

Re: new computer connecting to my wireless router

Try disabling the firewall and A/V if you have one installed, then connect to the network, and then re enable to firewall and A/V

Re: new computer connecting to my wireless router

hi,tried disabling mse/firewall but no luck.going into the wireless settings it seems to be sending"packets"but not receiving them. its says it is not getting an ip address from the network.anyway i connected it wired to the shub so it will do me as a back up if my new laptop has to go in for repair.i think i got a good deal on laptop samsung np3000v5a a04dx blue.amd a6, 6gb, 750 hd all for £220 ex display @ comet.just do casual surfacing so i think that it should do it with ease for a few years.if it last as long as the aforementioned acer i will be chuffed.actually come to think about it i paid £250 for the acer 4 years ago!.
