Connecting Samsung ML-4500 via usb

I have an old parellel printer that i wish to connect to my laptop (windows 7).

I have purchased a parallel to usb cable, but cannot get it to work.

Any ideas, thanks.

Re: Connecting Samsung ML-4500 via usb

If the usb/parellel cable isn't working then the only other way would be a print server but that assumes you are on a network.

I use a HP jetdirect 500 for old printers (it's a 3 port print server) which also means that any of the house PC's can also print directly to them without the other PC's being on.

Just be aware that you may need to search round for a copy of jetadmin to set them up but I do have a copy if you decide to go that route.

Re: Connecting Samsung ML-4500 via usb

Depends on the printer driver.. Some need to physically see a parallel port where as the USB parallel port will be a virtual one.

Only other option is if you have a PCMCIA slot on the laptop as you can get parallel port cards from about £20 at amazon

Samsungs official word on it is

Quote:
Adaptors can be purchased to allow a parallel device to run on a usb connection. However, we could not guarantee that it would operate successfully on every adaptor.

Re: Connecting Samsung ML-4500 via usb

TBH by the time you've spent money on leads and connectors you are probably a good way towards buying a new printer. Unless yourold printer was of super quality, with consumables still readily available, I'd be replacing it.
