HP added that it was considering selling its personal systems group, which includes the world's biggest PC-making business, and that it will discontinue its webOS devices.
The webOS operating system is used in its tablet computers and smartphones.
The announcements mark a significant U-turn for the company, which announced in a March strategic review that it would integrate webOS into all of its future hardware.
HP had launched its Pre tablet computer as a competitor to the iPad and devices based on Google's Android operating system.
However, webOS failed to gain traction with reviewers, operators and retailers.

In addition, HP reported that it plans to announce that it will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones. HP will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward.

"Oh, and by the way..."
Bye, bye TouchPad. Which tablet will be next to die?

Doesn't seem to make sense to me. The one thing I knew HP for was computer hardware. Not that I'd have ever bought it.

I don't really get how they can turn into a software company if they don't make any software now. Plus anything anyone needs already has a clear and defined market leader(s).
I think the world might be saying bye bye to HP soon enough.

They're just following IBM in moving away from a structure that they simply can not promise profits from in the future

Yup, they are just doing an IBM/Lenovo type move.
They will still make Printers, servers and sell their services and software, such as OpenView.

They do, but they sell it exclusively to the Enterprise market..
For instance, they are responsible for the (now renamed) Openview series of network and system management products.

Re: HP says bye bye to PCs, tablets and phones
Its a realy shame as WebOS is fantastic and although not that popular it had potential to make it big if they licenced it out to other hardware makers. Like Google did with Android.

Are they abandoning their server and network products too? Kinda curious since the server version of the Select PC national agreements just switched to HP...

I had a chat today with one of the senior UK HP guys - he said this does not include printers or servers or network kit...

I have quite a few HP USDT systems and they make great NAS boxes/media players. Far better than equivelant Dells etc.

Re: HP says bye bye to PCs, tablets and phones
I feel sort of sorry for the people behind webOS itself. It's apparently a really good OS, but was hampered by a) Lack of support and consequently a lack of apps [why develop for that instead of iOS & Android?], b) the hardware, and c) the price... Not a surprise that the TouchPad failed, really.
An amusing story came out today, now that leaks are springing after HP killed off the TouchPad etc.:
HP tested webOS on an iPad 2. It ran over twice as fast as the TouchPad

Update below.
With HP announcing it is to cease development of its webOS devices, we learned that before the HP’s TouchPad tablet and Pre smartphones were even released, everyone within the webOS team “wanted them gone”.
The hardware reportedly stopped the team from innovating beyond certain points because it was slow and imposed constraints, which was highlighted when webOS was loaded on to Apple’s iPad device and found to run the platform significantly faster than the device for which it was originally developed.
With a focus on web technologies, webOS could be deployed in the iPad’s Mobile Safari browser as a web-app; this produced similar results, with it running many times faster in the browser than it did on the TouchPad.
When HP announced its acquisition of Palm, the computing giant had already built the TouchPad hardware that sits on the shelves today. Basically, the TouchPad was a two-year old piece of hardware that the webOS team equipped with their tablet-friendly platform.

Did we really need any more fragmentation in the tablet market? iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows... Back in the old days I kinda liked the Microsoft monopoly since I wouldn't have to worry about having to use different software or OS' based on what piece of equipment I wanted.
