Re: Want to buy a laptop for <£500

Argh, i'm so full of confusion (still ) My DS got a home access laptop (lets not debate that one though eh? )

Anyway, it's a Samsung. It obviously has different features to my Toshiba... and tbh they aren't better and if my new laptop doesn't have them i will miss them.

For example, the Samsung has really, really poor sound quality. Very tinny. Also, i like the fact my Toshiba has a volume control on the actual casing. The keyboard is small on the Samsung... don't like it.

And i will miss XP but i spose i better move with the times Not liking Windows 7.

Maybe i need another Toshiba..... would like to see an Asus in the flesh though.

You are joking aren't you, Just because it's 5400 does not mean it will be limited, you look at all the latest desktop drives of 2TB in size, almost all are 5400, there are only a couple at 7200, does that mean that all new drives are going to hold you back, don't think so lol

To be honest all Laptop speakers are going to sound tinny, because of the size of a laptop you can't exactly fit a massive subwoofer in it hehe, i personally hate laptops and would always have a desptop but then again i don't need to move about with it, i would just get an external set of speakers.

As for Not liking windows 7, i was a bit like that, i didn't want to move from xp mainly because Vista had been so rubbish but i finally took the plunge to Win 7 and can say that it is the best system they have made so far

Some +17" laptops have mini subwoofers in them and I have to say they don't sound bad.
I made do with Vista since I upgraded at the same time it came out, never suffered any of the problems most people seemed to aside from a small drop in performance which had always been the case when upgrading to a new OS up until then. That is until I tried Win7 and got back most of the performance I had lost to Vista and gained some much better functionality to boot.
Have to say MS got it about right with 7, its not perfect but it is good and I fear they may have shot themselves in the foot and made another XP, that's good news for us as customers but bad news for MS in terms of sales.

sound - wise my Medion/Akoya laptop has a dual purpose 3.5mm headphone/ optical out jack - I just connect up to my 5:1 speakers or headphones, as appropriate ..

Re: Want to buy a laptop for <£500

Argh the Uni have lowered the funding this year so are only giving £135 towards it now This means the budget is now strictly no more than £400 but none of the Asus ones i saw are that cheap. I wanted an i3 that's not HP or Acer but not gonna get one that cheap am i?!

When I made the move to Windows 7, the first thing I installed was the classic shell
