Re: External Hardrive
To do your full system backup use the installed Acronis program on your pc.
To do a restore from a backup you can use the original acronis cd or the rescue disk. Either one will work.

Bung it in the cd drive and reboot your pc. It should start the acronis loader and eventually show you a menu. If it gets that far it should be ok.
(That's assuming your pc is set to boot from cd first)

Re: External Hardrive
Sounds like your getting there Roy, nice 1. Have you tried doing a back up with Acronis yet?
Maybe a good place to start would be to go to Computer->Double click your new Hard Drive letter F:
Now Right Click in an empty space, scroll down to New and select Folder. A new folder should appear and you can give it an appropriate name say My Backups. (depending on when you installed Acronis you may allready have on called My Backups)
This will be where you browse to when you are asked for the destination of the Archive (Archive Location).
p.s. Your not being a pain Roy, believe it or not most of us enjoy helping people sort things out, and the only dumb question is the one not asked

Re: External Hardrive
you back up to your spare hard drive an image of your operating system.
If your operating system fails then you boot from a recovery cd which allows you to copy the image back onto the main hard drive thus restoring to state the PC to the time which you took the back up.
A cd only holds 700 Mb your operating system alone will measure at least 5 Gb you do the math there is no way you can fit all that data on a cd

The point of the 'recovery' cd is that you need something to boot up to if your main hard drive fails/gets a virus
- once you boot to the recovery cd you can then access the backup on the external harddrive & restore the contents to a new main hard drive (if the old one has failed), or overwrite the infected one (if it has a virus).
- you can't just boot up the external harddrive.

Very close Roy. You boot from the recovery cd with your external drive connected. Then you use the 'recovery' option from the menu to copy the backup across to your pc. This replaces *everything* so it puts your pc back to exactly as it was when you made the backup.
